I would like to have an initial meeting to establish their learning styles and their areas of weakness and build my lessons around their needs. Having a bilingual literature background, I believe the road to success in analysis of poetry and understanding of texts is through practice. Nonetheless, there are structures and 'tips and tricks' to be learnt, using which even in stressful conditions one can be ensured to score well.
I change my teaching methodology to match individual students' personalities, but for entrance exams etc I prefer to go through the test with a student to see what it is in particular that they may struggle with so we know what to focus on.
