*LESSON NOTE ON CELL - FOR SUPERPROF PROFILE*
*Subject:* Biology
*Topic:* The Cell; History, Structure, Theories and Organelles
*Class:* SS1 - SS3 / JAMB Prep
*Duration:* 1 Hour
*LEARNING OBJECTIVES:* By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
1. Define a cell
2. Mention scientists who contributed to cell discovery
3. State the cell theory
4. Draw and label plant and animal cells
5. State functions of cell organelles
*1. DEFINITION OF CELL*
The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of life. All living things are made of cells. It is the smallest unit that can carry out all life processes.
*2. SCIENTISTS WHO CONTRIBUTED TO CELL DISCOVERY*
- *Robert Hooke (1665):* English scientist who first discovered and named "cells" when he observed cork under microscope. He saw honeycomb-like compartments.
- *Anton Van Leeuwenhoek (1674):* First to observe living cells (bacteria, protozoa) using his improved microscope. Father of Microbiology.
- *Matthias Schleiden (1838):* German botanist who stated all plants are made of cells.
- *Theodor Schwann (1839):* German zoologist who stated all animals are made of cells.
- *Rudolf Virchow (1855):* Added that all cells come from pre-existing cells - "Omnis cellula e cellula".
*3. THE CELL THEORY (Modern)*
1. All living organisms are composed of one or more cells.
2. The cell is the basic unit of life.
3. All cells arise from pre-existing cells.
4. The cell contains hereditary information (DNA) which is passed from cell to cell.
5. All cells have similar chemical composition and metabolic activities.
*4. STRUCTURE OF THE CELL*
There are two main types: Plant and Animal cells. Both have organelles suspended in cytoplasm.
*Key Organelles and Their Functions:*
Organelle Function
**Cell Membrane** Controls what enters/leaves the cell. Protects cell.
**Cell Wall (Plants only)** Gives rigidity, shape and protection. Made of cellulose.
**Nucleus** Controls all activities. Contains DNA/chromosomes. "Brain of the cell".
**Cytoplasm** Jelly-like fluid where all organelles are suspended. Site of chemical reactions.
**Mitochondrion** Powerhouse - produces energy (ATP) via respiration.
**Ribosome** Site of protein synthesis (protein factory).
**Endoplasmic Reticulum** Rough ER: transports proteins. Smooth ER: makes lipids.
**Golgi Body** Packages and distributes proteins.
**Chloroplast (Plants only)** Site of photosynthesis. Contains chlorophyll.
**Vacuole** Stores water, food, waste. Large in plants, small in animals.
**Lysosome** Contains enzymes for digestion, destroys worn-out organelles.
**Centriole (Animals only)** Helps in cell division.

John was my colleague at the College of Health. He is an excellent Biology teacher, very knowledgeable in Anatomy and Genetics. He takes time to make sure students really understand. He is trustworthy and I recommend him for any Superprof student.
John taught me Biology in Nnewi, he is very patient and explains with simple diagrams. I passed my exam because of him
I know John from Nnewi. He tutored my younger brother in Biology for WAEC and JAMB. He is very patient, explains difficult topics with simple diagrams, and my brother scored B in Biology. I highly recommend John to any student looking for a Biology tutor.
John taught me Biology for my WAEC and I scored B2. He explains difficult topics very simply with diagrams. Highly recommended
