About Catherine
I started my career in science as an apprentice within the nuclear industry. I worked full-time within active laboratories while studying part-time in Natural Sciences via distance learning. My favorite projects while working in industry were investigating the effect of microbes on nuclear waste, it was exciting and I learned so much about working in laboratories. In 2021 I then went on to do my Master's degree in the UK at the University of Manchester which I graduated with a 3.5 GPA. During my undergraduate studies I worked in three research jobs where I studied in both experimental and theoretical chemistry. My most recent project was based in Winnipeg where I was investigating uranium in seawater. I am also a part-time ski instructor and am used to coaching young people professionally in the outdoors, making learning fun and exciting!

I am a very friendly and approachable science tutor who loves to help others achieve their educational and career goals! I understand that chemistry can be a daunting subject, but given the right tools and resources you can master this subject with confidence. Over the span of my career I have brought together a comprehensive folder of links, resources and worksheets that can help make this subject easier to learn and help students visualize things easier. As someone who also initially struggled with this subject, I strive to make chemistry as interactive and interesting as possible for students! I use a variety of software where I illustrate to students the molecules and reactions in 3D, helping them visualize their problems very clearly. I am very experienced in using computer simulations to animate certain ideas. I also use a graphics tablet where I draw directly onto the screen in live time, so I can illustrate concepts and drawings as I go along with my lesson plan. I am a visual learner myself and think this works much better than just explaining things verbally!
I am always open to questions about what it's like to work in industry and research and would really encourage any student to be curious and investigative when it comes to their possible career paths. I am also open to career-specific or university application coaching sessions where I can give advice about the options available for students wishing to pursue a science career, whether that's within Canada or internationally.
