About Isla
I hold a Bachelor’s in Computer Science from San Jose State University and have 5 years of tutoring experience, with 4 years conducting one-to-one lessons online for middle and high school students. I introduce programming as practical problem solving rather than intimidating syntax. We start with computational thinking: how to break a problem into steps, how to test assumptions, and how to read what a program does. From there we practice small, meaningful projects in Python, query and explore data with SQL, create interactive basics in JavaScript, and look at Java structure where relevant. I also offer gentle introductions to core AI ideas — what a model does and why it can be useful — all without unnecessary jargon. Every lesson is hands-on: students write code, run it, and learn debugging as a useful investigative skill. The emphasis is on clarity, incremental wins, and transferable habits so students can tackle school projects and feel prepared for first-year computing.
