About PAOLIN
In 2009, I got my Bachelor Degree at the University of Cauca-Colombia with a thesis on aquatic ecotoxicology of heavy metals in Oreochromis niloticus fish. Then, I moved to Brazil for my Master’s Degree, at the Brasilia University. My project focused on assessing the effects of magnetic exfoliated vermiculite in Danio rerio fish. At the same laboratory, I started my PhD course, focused on the nanoecotoxicology of metallic nanoparticles in adult and embryos of Danio rerio fish and Poecilia reticulate fish. This project included handling and production of zebrafish eggs for embryo-toxicological assessments. For the in vivo experiments, I have been mainly working with genotoxic (comet assay, micronucleus and nuclear abnormalities test) and histopathological biomarkers (in gills, liver and intestine), detection and biodistribution of silver, titanium, aluminum, copper and zinc nanoparticles. My scientific background also includes several techniques for the physicochemical characterization of nanomaterials, such as DLS, Nanoparticles Tracking Analysis, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopies, FTIR, TEM, SEM, XRD, XPS and ICP-MS.
My previous working experiences helped me to build a highly interdisciplinary expertise, covering nanotoxicology, nanomaterial characterization and in vivo/in vitro assessment. Working in multicultural research groups, I have developed a strong attitude towards teamwork with researcher from all over the world. My previous teaching and mentoring experiences with undergraduate and PhD students demonstrated my potential to supervise students. Indeed, this potential was established thanks to my previous career as teacher of biology, chemistry and physics for college students in Colombia.
