About Vicky
I am an award-winning filmmaker, creative practitioner and educator with more than 15 years' experience working across film, fashion, art, design, animation and digital media.
My practice is interdisciplinary, bringing together visual storytelling, image-making, art direction, fashion, moving image and creative experimentation.
I graduated from the National Film and Television School (NFTS) with an MA in Directing Animation and have worked professionally across feature films, commercials, fashion film, animation, art direction, costume and creative production.
Alongside my professional practice, I have many years' experience teaching and mentoring creative students, including as a Senior Lecturer and MA Course Leader in UK higher education.
I particularly enjoy helping students develop an idea from its earliest stages — exploring research, references and possibilities before turning it into a considered creative project.
My approach is exploratory and collaborative. I don't believe creative work should follow a fixed formula or particular aesthetic. Instead, I help students experiment, make connections between different creative disciplines and develop a visual language that feels personal to them.
Whether you're developing an artwork, visual project, fashion concept, moving-image piece, illustration, experimental project or simply trying to work out where your creative interests might lead, I can provide practical guidance, creative feedback and an experienced outside perspective.
Online one-to-one mentoring available worldwide.

My one-to-one sessions are designed to help you develop your creative ideas, experiment with different approaches and build confidence in your own visual practice.
You might already have a specific project you want to develop, or you might simply have a collection of ideas, interests, images and references that you want to explore.
We can work together to turn those starting points into a more developed and purposeful creative project.
What We Can Explore
Sessions can include:
• Developing creative ideas and concepts
• Visual research and gathering references
• Finding and developing your personal visual language
• Drawing, illustration and image-making
• Art and design projects
• Fashion, styling and visual culture
• Art direction and creative direction
• Photography and moving image
• Experimental and interdisciplinary projects
• Developing concepts from research into creative work
• Experimenting with different materials, techniques and approaches
• Reviewing existing creative work
• Constructive feedback and creative problem-solving
• Developing confidence in your creative practice
From Ideas to Creative Practice
I particularly enjoy helping students move from “I have an idea” to “I know what I want to make and why.”
We might begin with research, references, sketches, photographs, drawings or conversations, then explore different possibilities through experimentation.
Research → Ideas → Experimentation → Development → Creative Work
There doesn't need to be a predetermined outcome. The process can be about discovering what interests you and allowing the work to develop organically.
My Approach
I don't believe there is one correct way to make creative work.
My role is to help you discover what is interesting and distinctive about your ideas, while encouraging you to experiment and take creative risks.
I'll give you honest, constructive feedback while making sure that the work remains your own.
You don't need to arrive with a finished project. We can start with a question, an idea, a sketch, an image, a piece of work or simply something you're curious about.
Who I Work With
These sessions can be useful for:
Creative students developing projects alongside their studies.
Young artists and makers exploring their creative interests.
Aspiring designers and illustrators developing ideas and visual work.
Fashion and creative practitioners exploring image-making, styling and visual culture.
Interdisciplinary creatives working across art, design, film, photography, fashion and digital media.
Anyone wanting to develop their creative practice with an experienced creative practitioner and mentor.
Sessions are available online and can be tailored to your experience, interests and current project.

I have had the pleasure of working with Vicky and can wholeheartedly say that she is an exceptionally talented animator, educator and creative professional. She brings a wealth of experience from the television and film industry, as well as extensive experience directing commercials and teaching animation to an advanced level.
Vicky is not only highly skilled and knowledgeable, but also incredibly passionate about helping her students succeed. She consistently goes above and beyond the call of duty, offering encouragement, guidance and support that extends far beyond what would normally be expected. Her ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, inspire confidence and bring out the best in those around her is truly impressive.
She is also an outstanding team player, adaptable, approachable and a pleasure to work with. Her excellent interpersonal skills, professionalism and enthusiasm make her a real asset to any creative or educational team. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Vicky — she is an exceptional talent and a genuinely inspiring person to work alongside.Vicky has had a massive impact on my life that I carry with me daily. Always struggling through school and connecting with teachers through my whole life. Vicky gave me the confidence I needed and truly saw my potential through my lack of focus.
I genuinely believe she has a gift and anyone who has the pleasure of meeting her will learn something as she has such a unique way about her.Thank you Vicky for taking the time to understand how I learn, I always remember you as the most valuable teacher in my life xVicky has had a huge impact on the way I think creatively and has played a big part in getting me to where I am today as an Art Director. She taught me to look at things differently, push my ideas further and have more confidence in my creative thinking.
She has continued to mentor me throughout my career, always giving honest advice and connecting me with the right people and opportunities. She genuinely wants to see you succeed and goes out of her way to help.
I’m really grateful for everything she has taught me and continues to teach me.Vicky was the course leader during my MA Fashion Media Production programme at UAL. She was incredibly kind, supportive, and inspiring, and encouraged us to think critically about our work. Her classes were always engaging and I genuinely looked forward to them. She played a big part in making my time at UAL such an enjoyable and meaningful experience, and I’m very grateful to have had her as a tutor. Beyond the programme itself, Vicky has had a lasting influence on how I approach my creative practice. She taught me to be curious, detail-oriented, and confident in my work, while also thinking about the wider context behind what I create.
I know Vicky from my time at UAL LCF where she was one of my tutors and course leaders. She was always so supportive and encouraging and really took the time to understand my creative vision and where I wanted to take my work. I especially appreciated her support during my final MA project, where she helped me feel more confident in my ideas and how I was presenting them. She was always someone I could talk to about my work and I never felt like I had to have everything figured out before sharing my ideas with her. She genuinely cares about her students and wants to see them do well and she’s also really good at connecting you with other people in the industry which is so helpful. I’d definitely recommend Vicky to anyone looking for someone who will really listen to their ideas, encourage them and help them develop their creative vision.
Vicky was my course lead during my MA, and she's one of the people I credit most directly with where my career is today.
Vicky has a rare gift for spotting the skills you don't yet see in yourself and drawing them out. At a point when I wasn't sure research was something I could actually do, she pushed me to trust my own thinking and take my ideas seriously.
Her real depth of experience is combined with academic process, so her guidance was never just encouraging, it was sharp and well-founded.
That combination shaped how I've worked ever since. Any student who gets to work with Vicky is lucky.I had Vicky as my postgraduate tutor, and she was genuinely one of those tutors who makes you want to do well. She is incredibly knowledgeable, passionate about the arts and always willing to support her students. She is friendly and approachable, but also strict in the best way, pushing you to challenge yourself and produce your best work. You can tell how much she cares about her subject and her students, and that passion really comes through in the way she teaches. I would highly recommend Vicky to any student looking for a tutor who will both support and push them to succeed.
Vicky guided me throughout my time at UAL and was much more than just a tutor. She was a real mentor, always encouraging me to develop my own creative voice and helping me grow both professionally and personally. What I valued most was the human side of her teaching: she taught us not only about our creative practice, but also about curiosity, empathy and the importance of believing in our own ideas.
I’m incredibly grateful to have had Vicky as part of my journey. She was one of the people who really helped me find my voice and gave me the confidence to follow my own path. Her support has stayed with me far beyond university, and I feel very lucky to have had her as a mentor.Vicky guided me throughout my time at UAL and was much more than just a tutor. What you get with her is real, hands-on experience and deep connections to the industry. She doesn't only bring theory to her classes, but much needed real-world experience and advice.
I've worked with Vicky for a number of years at UAL, and I can say she is the teacher I wish I had when I was a student.
I can’t recommend Vicky highly enough. She was my teacher at college and played a huge part in helping me discover the film industry and opportunities for a career within it.
Since leaving college, I’ve stayed in touch with Vicky, and she has continued to mentor and support me throughout the years. Her guidance, encouragement, and genuine passion for helping others have had a lasting impact on my career.Vicky is an amazing mentor and teacher. She has the best energy and is my fave teacher I’ve ever had (for real). She’s incredibly knowledgeable, and I couldn’t have asked for any more from her.
I first met Vicky in 2016 during my time in education. She was always incredibly thorough going through my work, going above and beyond to help.
Vicky is able to be engaging and professional at the same time, twinned with her industry knowledge allows you to feel relaxed to share creative ideas/ innovations.
I would highly recommend Vicky, she is extremely passionate about her work and will always help you find a creative solution in complicated scenarios.Lessons with Vicky never felt overly formal, and I mean that in the best possible way. She created an environment where we could actually be ourselves, experiment, make mistakes, and figure things out. My two years with her were really special, not only because of how much I learned, but because of her quirky personality and loud, colourful presence.
I learned so much about filmmaking and the wider context around it, but what I appreciated most was how much she tried to give us experiences beyond the classroom. She organised trips outside of university, brought in special guests for talks and industry exposure, and even helped us put together our own festival. She genuinely wanted us to experience the industry and understand what exists beyond the university bubble.
Whoever gets Vicky as their tutor next is very lucky, because they’re in very good hands. I’ll always be grateful for the energy, encouragement, and honesty she brought to the two years I spent learning from her. She is genuinely not one of those tutors you come across randomly.
I had the pleasure of studying under Vicky during my MA Fashion Film and Digital Production at London College of Fashion, UAL, where she was our Course Leader. She is one of the most caring and dedicated teachers I have ever met.
Throughout the course, Vicky was always there to support us. She genuinely cared about every student and always tried her best to help us overcome difficulties, whether it was developing our ideas, improving our projects, or preparing for our final outcomes. She always made us feel supported and encouraged.
What I really appreciated about Vicky was her teaching style. She was very patient and approachable, and always explained things clearly from the basics to make sure everyone could follow. Her classes were practical and engaging, with many creative exercises that helped us understand concepts better and apply them to our own work.
Vicky created a very positive learning environment where we felt comfortable sharing ideas, experimenting, and growing as creatives. I’m very grateful for her guidance during my time at LCF and would highly recommend her as a teacher.During the MA Fashion, Film and Digital Production Program at the University of the Arts London, I genuinely learned a great deal. As we all know, this is a field heavily focused on practical production, so relatively speaking, my classmates and I were somewhat weaker in theoretical research. Not only did Vicky provide valuable advice throughout the filming process, but she also specifically organized tutoring sessions for us in the areas of theory and research proposal. She even created very clear and well-structured PowerPoint presentations to help us understand the importance of research. On the practical side, Vicky connected us with Nowness, providing access to cutting-edge industry resources and helping us secure numerous opportunities. Moreover, even after graduation, I have maintained frequent contact with Vicky. She is truly an energetic and supportive teacher who has had a lifelong impact on me. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to Vicky for her help during my master's studies!
I had the privilege of learning from Vicky at a formative stage in my development as a director, and her influence has stayed with me ever since.
With an internationally recognised career in filmmaking and creative education, Vicky brings an exceptional depth of professional experience to her mentoring. What makes her truly distinctive, however, is the way she wears that experience so lightly. She is never intimidating, dismissive or overly precious about ideas. Even the most unusual creative instinct is taken seriously, explored with curiosity, and shaped through precise, thoughtful guidance.
Learning from Vicky never feels dry or overly academic. She is warm, funny and incredibly sharp, and somehow manages to feel less like a distant “industry figure” and more like having an exceptionally experienced filmmaker friend who genuinely wants your work to become the best version of itself.
She never teaches creativity as a formula. Instead, she encourages you to understand why you are making an image, what you truly want to communicate, and how to develop a creative voice and visual language that are genuinely your own. Her feedback is rigorous, honest and highly perceptive, while always grounded in the realities of production.
Her mentorship sharpened the way I think about authorship, visual language and the responsibility of representation. She encouraged me to consider not only how an image functions aesthetically, but also whose experiences it makes visible and how those perspectives are articulated. That perspective continues to inform my practice today.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Vicky to anyone looking for intelligent, inspiring and genuinely transformative mentorship in filmmaking, visual storytelling or the development of their own creative practice.Vicky was my Course Leader for the MA Fashion Film and Digital Production programme at London College of Fashion. During the year and a half I studied with her, I learned a great deal from her, both creatively and professionally.
Vicky is an incredibly supportive, thoughtful and dedicated educator. She has a genuine passion for teaching and always makes an effort to understand each student's ideas and creative direction. Rather than simply telling you what to do, she encourages you to think independently, develop your own voice and find the best way to bring your ideas to life. Her feedback is always honest, practical and constructive, and she is extremely generous with her time and experience.
One experience that particularly stands out was a project I worked on in collaboration with NOWNESS. Throughout the development of the film, Vicky gave me a lot of valuable and practical advice, helping me refine both the concept and the execution. Her guidance gave me more confidence in my creative decisions and played an important role in pushing the project further. The film was eventually published on NOWNESS, which became a very meaningful milestone for me.
What I appreciate most about Vicky is how genuinely invested she is in her students. She cares about their growth and is always willing to support them in any way she can. I would highly recommend Vicky to anyone looking for a knowledgeable, inspiring and genuinely caring mentor in fashion film, digital production and creative filmmaking.
Vicky was my course leader during my MA in Fashion Film and Digital Production at the London College of Fashion from 2023-2025.
She is by far the most patient, knowledgeable, dedicated, caring, and approachable educator I have had the fortune to learn from. Her words still resonate with me and my practice.
She's the one person I could go to with anything from a single spark of an idea to the most detailed production schedule, and she'd still go through every single thing with a fine-toothed comb. Because of her vast experience, she always helped me improve.
She's not the kind of educator who'd stick you with a general bunch of lessons; she's the one who'd carefully understand your needs and goals and craft something unique so that you succeed. She'll be the one person cheering loudest in your corner.I have known Vicky since we met on the film festival circuit in 2010, where we bonded immediately over cinema and our frankly magnificent curly hair.
Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside her as a guest lecturer, running workshops and attending her students’ thesis presentations. Vicky is an exceptional educator: warm, enormously knowledgeable and blessed with a brilliant creative eye. Her students trust her, respect her opinion and, most importantly, she inspires them to be better filmmakers.
I had the pleasure of studying under Vicky on the MA Fashion Film and Digital Production course at UAL, where she was our Course Leader. Vicky is an exceptional mentor—knowledgeable, encouraging, and genuinely invested in the creative development of her students. Her experience as an NFTS directing graduate brought a unique perspective to our course, and her feedback always challenged me to think more critically and confidently about my own artistic practice. She has a wonderful ability to balance creative inspiration with practical industry advice. I wholeheartedly recommend Vicky to anyone looking for thoughtful portfolio reviews, creative mentoring, or support in developing their artistic practice and career!
Vicky is an incredibly knowledgeable, engaging and supportive tutor with extensive experience in creative production. I have worked alongside her for the past three and a half years and have always been impressed by her energy, organisation and commitment to her students.
She combines practical industry knowledge with an ability to encourage students to think outside the box, push beyond their comfort zones and develop ambitious ideas, while remaining realistic about what can be achieved within the practical constraints of a production. She helps students find creative solutions and turn their ideas into achievable outcomes. She is passionate about what she teaches and genuinely invested in helping her students develop and succeed.
I would highly recommend Vicky to other Superprof members looking for practical, inspiring and industry-focused guidance in production.Having worked alongside Vicky for a number of years, you won't find a teacher who is as caring, attentive, and knowledgeable about production as she is! She brings to the table an excellent balance of practical experience and conceptual teachings that benefit anyone under her tutelage.
I am writing to offer my unreserved and strongest possible recommendation for Vicky Mather.
During my seven years as a university course leader, I had the distinct privilege of working closely alongside Vicky. I can state without hesitation that she is one of the most exceptional educators and tutors I have encountered across my career in higher education.
Vicky possesses that rare combination of creative vision and pedagogical insight that truly inspires students to push beyond their perceived limits. She genuinely cares about her students, remaining deeply committed to their personal and academic achievements. Crucially, she understands that success in a creative field is not a one size fits all metric; she treats every student as an individual, tailoring her mentorship to help them realise their own unique voice and potential.
Higher education can often present a demanding and challenging environment, yet Vicky consistently proved to be a cornerstone of strength and innovation within our team. She brought imaginative solutions to complex problems and offered unwavering support to her colleagues. Her collaborative spirit, combined with her professional warmth, elevated the work of everyone around her.
I cannot think of anyone more deserving of my highest recommendation. Vicky Mather is an outstanding educator who will undoubtedly prove to be an invaluable credit to your institution.
Yours faithfully,
Ray Kilby
Retired Course Leader, MA FilmUnlike so many teachers and tutors, Vicky has an enormous amount of first hand experience as a multi award-winning filmmaker, who has been represented as a director at the most prestigious production companies in the world. Thankfully, there is no ego to Vicky, who, despite being so talented, talks and teaches in a normal, humorous and highly accessible way, that makes learning effortless and fun.
Vicky was my professor from 2020-2022. She helped me obtain my master's degree, and when all other areas of academia had previously turned their back on me, Vicky saw and nurtured my skill sets.
Now I am running an award-winning brand consultancy, offering aesthetic guidance and packages to world-renowned names in both fashion and business.
Thank you, Vicky.View more recommendations
