About Alexandru

● Experience: hundreds of hours in 1-to-1 tutoring ● In total, more than 20 students tutored ● I've helped undergraduate students understand and develop their final year projects, while having tutored GCSE, AS & A2 pupils in biology and computer science as well. Having had a rigorous education in Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Arts (Piano performance), I have finished high school at the top of my class. Back then, I discovered that I enjoy helping my peers with homework. As the years have passed, peers in my University courses requested my tutorials and so I've picked up a truly satisfying hobby for myself. Students that have had even: - Minimal understanding of their projects - Close to zero progress in their first pass of the syllabus Have ultimately achieved deep understanding of their work and satisfactory upgrades in their marks. For example, a student with no previous experience in bioinformatics has achieved an upper 2:1 in their omics thesis after I've helped just once a week for a month. Had we had more time, our progress would've easily led to a strong first class work. Other undergraduates I've helped have achieved strong 1st class grades, while my GCSE, AS & A2 students have scored As and A*s. I have recently handed in my thesis, enabling me to dedicate more time to tutoring. For trial purposes, I offer the first half-a-tutorial (30 min) free of charge so that the students can see whether they feel comfortable with the help they'd receive.

I always start with giving a rough intuition of the concepts, as I've found that simple language and good concept drawings always aid in keeping the student's interest high. The details are always much easier to add when the student can see the big picture. For example, I would show the most relevant 3D animations (handpicked from my personal list) or the drawings I've made in the past efforts to best explain the processes. Then, in terms of adding details to these, I am highly flexible and listen to the student's input. Based on the requests, I've either directed the lessons by establishing goals and guiding the practice entirely, or to help in whichever details the student needs while navigating the self-proposed schedule. I am truly friendly and open minded with students, as I've been grateful to have received the same mentorship from my own professors and tutors. Thus, most of the students having taken tutorials with me have had an easy time recognising and admitting what they knew and what they did not, which I believe should be less taboo than it is with other educators. My goal is to make you enjoy and understand your topics.

Details

I teach in Oxford or over Skype. If the student is more than 2 miles away from my address (227 Iffley Road, OX41SQ), I charge the bus ticket (with return) in addition to the fee, or accept transport by car if you wish to pick me up. For online tutorials, I use Skype for calling & share the screen for quick interactive illustration purposes with my graphic tablet.
