About Jake
I am currently a Doctoral Researcher in Political Theory, specialising in populism, with excellent knowledge of ideology, conservatism, post-Marxism, and the history of political theory.
I also hold a First Class degree in History and Political Science, and a Distinction Masters in Political Theory; I have taught at many levels and in many different institutions, and am comfortable leading classes on a one-to-one basis, as well as in groups.

In a group, my teaching method is to introduce the topic via a thinker, detailing their life and works, why they wrote what they did, how their work has been interpreted, and potential controversies surrounding that work, before moving on to discussions on those topics.
In a private setting, I prefer to break down the sessions into twenty-minute periods in which we first discuss the content, then plan an essay based on the content , and finally write a detailed paragraph (as part of the essay) in the third period.

Jake has worked for the Student Mentor Scheme, a welfare support service operating within University of Birmingham accommodation run in collaboration with the Guild of Student for 3 academic years, running from June 2015 until June 2018. He has not been subject to any disciplinary or capability proceedings and no allegations or concerns were raised in relation to working in the safety and welfare of the students he worked with.
Jake began working for the Scheme as a mentor in June 2015 and is responsible for providing proactive welfare support to students. He worked largely independently to build good working relationships with fellow students by which to provide emotional support and practical help and referrals within a friendly and approachable service.
Jake has displayed a real conscientiousness in all aspects of his work, being well organised and thorough. He has shown a great ability to coordinate and organise others while building and maintain strong personal relationships with his team, managers and stakeholders.
He is very attentive to detail and works well within a team as well as independently. He is capable of delegating roles to others as well as using his initiative, especially when faced with high risk scenarios.
His display of commitment to student’s welfare has been commended. In particular for the support he has given to a number of students with mental health concerns and academic support needs and has assisted them with their transition into university life. Jake received an award for “Outstanding Student Staff” in 2017 for his dedication to the role.
Jake is extremely passionate about education and the opportunities it can allow students and he would provide strong one-to-one support. Jake is a friendly, warm and outgoing individual and was an asset to the Scheme. Jake is a very able and reliable individual who would be capable of excelling in whichever capacity he focuses his enthusiasm and commitment to. I have no hesitation in passing on my highest recommendations to any future or prospective employers; he is a pleasure to work with.Jake is a highly qualified student of history and political science with passion and enthusiasm for these subjects
