About Fiona
Qualifications
I am a qualified teacher specialising in supporting learners with maths learning difficulties. Alongside my PGCE, I hold a Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Education (Dyscalculia) from Edge Hill University. I have been awarded AMBDA Dyscalculia status by the British Dyslexia Association, which indicates that I am a specialist maths teacher. I worked in secondary schools as a teacher and in learning support, before becoming a full time specialist maths tutor. I hold an enhanced DBS with the update service and take safeguarding seriously.
Individualised support
My qualifications, and 10 years of tutoring experience enable me to identify each learner’s strengths, weaknesses and how they learn best, and I tailor my teaching to each individual student. This means I vary the teaching style, pace and challenge in my lessons. I support students with diagnosed or suspected dyscalculia, dyslexia, maths anxiety, autism or ADHD, and many with a combination of needs. I also work with students who lack confidence at maths or who feels that they can't do maths. My calm, patient, imaginative and encouraging approach helps students to become more confident at maths.

I tutor online via Zoom, and I find this works well, especially for learners who are anxious about maths, because they were in their own familiar surroundings. I have availability for home schooling, or after school tuition, on Mondays to Thursdays. Lessons are usually and hour, but can be longer on request. I tutor maths at KS3, GCSE, IGCSE (at both Foundation and Higher papers, AQA and Edexcel, resits), and functional skills.
I use the first lesson as an informal assessment to begin to build up a picture of the new students aspirations, strengths and weaknesses. In my teaching I break topics down into small sequential steps and teach at the pace that is right for each learner. Maths is cumulative, and it is important to identify and address gaps in prior learning in order to build secure foundations for future learning.
Some learners benefit from a visual approach, targeted maths games or by applying maths to a learner's interest e.g. football. Others will benefit from discovering alternative methods that makes more sense to them. I support students with developing their numeracy, maths reasoning, maths vocabulary and worded problem solving. I guide students as they prepare for exams with suggestions of strategies for effective revision and exam performance. I encourage questions and enjoy helping students to discover they way they learn best. I want my students to experience success, and to become better at maths than they believed was possible. Please get in touch if you are interested in finding out more.
