A Bit About Me:
I am a young tutor with eight years of experience teaching students of all levels in English and Creative Writing. I have a first class undergraduate degree in English Literature and an MSt in Creative Writing from the University of Cambridge. I am an enthusiastic teacher who keeps up with changing attitudes towards learning styles and teaching methodologies. I value students’ thoughts and always encourage them to be open with me about how they would like to learn. This is key to my teaching style, and I have been praised for it during my time as a tutor by a number of parents and students. Above all, I actively strive to keep my students engaged and to help them cultivate a love of their chosen subject.
Every lesson is tailored to the individual student, according to their wants and needs. I will assess their work on a continuous basis, so that I can effectively identify any gaps in their knowledge and gear my lesson plans towards those gaps. A typical lesson plan would feature several activities on a single subject (i.e. spelling, punctuation, essay writing etc.). This prevents students from becoming overwhelmed, without requiring them to focus on one task for the entirety of the lesson. As such, they are better able to remain engaged and focused throughout.
I have been giving lessons for 8 years, since I was 15 years old, when my English teacher asked me to assist her with one of her younger classes. Since then, teaching has been a major part of my life.
In the past I have worked as a tutor at a tuition centre, where I taught English to students between the ages of 4 and 16 years old. I have also tutored older students, in a private capacity, and through tutoring agencies.
Over the years my students have flourished and I continually receive feedback from parents praising my ability to give students a sense of clarity, confidence and a renewed love of English.
Who I Am:
I am an experienced English and Creative Writing tutor teaching up to and including undergraduate degree level. I have eight years of experience teaching privately and was trained at a tuition centre.
There are a few principles which serve as the foundation to my teaching methodology and techniques, which are as follows:
- The student’s opinion is important, and I will always listen to what they have to say.
- Confidence is crucial. I actively encourage my students, and nurture their confidence on an ongoing basis.
- No activity needs to be boring. There are always ways to make learning interesting and engaging. We learn best when we are enjoying ourselves.
Mary-Anne and I have been close friends for about a year and a half. Not only is she kindhearted, funny, and approachable, but possesses a great mastery of style, a strong command of language, and an expert eye for grammatical structures. I would recommend her to any and all students looking to hone their English language or writing skills.
Mary Anne teaches my foster child 1 hour per week. She is pleasant, reliable, polite, professional and engages very well with her pupil. She adapts her teaching approach to promote understanding and ensure confidence and development. My foster child enjoys the lessons which is an achievement in itself!
Mary-Anne has been tutoring for a number of years and is excellent at planning her lessons in detail and tailoring her approach to suit a range of different students. Her talent for creative writing earned her a place on the creative writing MSt at Cambridge University where she has received the highest standard of training from experts in this field.
