About Torien

Many tutors have learned about just one thing: teaching. The problem with this is a lot like the problem with writers who only learn about writing, which is that you often end up with too little experience to draw upon and therefore nothing to write about. This is my broad experience offers something unique to the table: not only do I know how to teach, but I have lots to teach about!

My career began as a classically trained actor, producer, playwright, and dramaturg. Since 2015 I have been co-Artistic Director of a community-engaged immersive arts company, It’s Not A Box Theatre. We have written applications for and received grants worth over $200,000 and we have toured work to Fringe Festivals, SummerWorks Festival, and the Prague Quadrennial multiple times. At Simon Fraser University I studied autistic/ADHD modes of creativity for my MFA research, graduating with a 3.98 GPA.

Over the past decade I have facilitated countless workshops for emerging writers of all kinds, often teaching writing fundamentals and critiquing fiction and dramatic text. I have instructed classes and residencies for both youth and adults in playwriting, dramaturgy, devised performance creation, and acting at Persephone Theatre School, Trickster Theatre, GTNT, E.D. Feehan Catholic High School. As a Teaching Assistant and guest lecturer at Simon Fraser University I led tutorial discussions, critiqued essays, graded exams, and guided student research in the arts and humanities. Most recently I have been conducting games-based learning research with Brainiacs Adventures.

All this experience has provided me with an interdisciplinary understanding of literature, writing, testing, oratory, and performance, and how to teach these to students of various ages and abilities. If you want someone who knows that teaching is about more than just knowing how to teach, I'm the tutor for you :)

My pedagogy takes inspiration from the Reggio Emilia approach, which often uses interdisciplinary projects and emergent curriculum to honour a student’s agency and their natural curiosities, pace, and modes of learning.

For example this might look like inviting students to: a) conduct historical research projects around their own personal interests; b) learn literary devices through creative writing exercises; c) understand classical literature through performance or tabletop RPGs; or, d) work through difficult material through accessible study guides, creative media, and video essays.

Any subject can be engaging and interactive this way. Based on my experience, I am comfortable offering lessons to students of all ages, ideally for:

- English (composition, phonics, literature, creative writing)

- Arts (performing arts, theatre, basic game design, elementary visual art)

- Debate / Oratory (Canadian and British debate formats, rhetoric, vocal techniques, speech writing, etc)
