About Joey

I am an English tutor with an approachable, friendly demeanour. Highly experienced, with 6 years of tutoring for the ISEB Common Pre-Test, 11+, 13+, GCSEs, A-Levels and Pre-Us. Students range from 7-18 years old. My recent experience as a university student (Durham University, 2020 and Central Saint Martins, 2023) allows me the privilege of close proximity in age with students, ensuring a comfortable and reassuring learning environment for my students. I achieved a 2:1 CertHE qualification from Durham University, and am on track to graduate from Central Saint Martins this year with a 2:1. I achieved all As at A-Level in 2018 in English Literature, History, Ancient History and German. I also achieved 6 A*s and 3 As in my GCSEs in 2016. I am London-based and can only offer online tutoring at the moment.

My students range from the ages of 7-18 years old. I am experienced in tutoring for the following: KS3 English GCSE English Language GCSE English Literature A-Level English Literature English as a Foreign Language I also have experience preparing students for the ISEB Common Pre-Test, 11+ Entrance Exam, 13+ Common Entrance, GCSEs, A-Levels, Pre-Us, UCAS Applications, University Personal Statements and for the IELTS. I am familiar and comfortable with the three main awarding bodies for English Language and Literature at GCSE and A-Level (Edexcel, AQA, and OCR), and for preparing students for the Cambridge Pre-U examinations. English Language / Literature (GCSE): I am able to tutor English Literature and English Language GCSE. My approach will be to look at exam papers and discuss the requirements of each question, coaching students through how to analyse the different aspects of a text, including content, language, and structure. I am well-versed in a range of set texts, including but not exclusive to: Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Of Mice and Men, To Kill A Mockingbird, An Inspector Calls, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, and the anthology poems with the themes ‘Power and Conflict’ and ‘Love and Relationships’. I am also happy to tutor English at KS3, A-Level, Pre-U level. I am also able to tutor English as a Foreign Language, in preparation for the IELTS exam. Please contact me if there are particular texts or aspects of English you would like to discuss. My approach: In terms of structuring the lessons, I would start off with a quick assessment of the student's current knowledge of the subject, and then create a plan personalised and tailored to their needs. We would then continue focusing on areas that may be problematic for the student. At school, I always struggled to ask for help from teachers. As a tutor, I aim to be approachable, friendly and informative - no question is too silly to ask! I encourage all my students to be open about any problems they may be having with their studies. Academic confidence and academic achievement go hand in hand. Preparing for my own exams at school taught me that it is crucial to ask for help when you need it. Each student is completely different - in terms of the way they approach the subject, as well as the separate needs that need special attention. I aim to establish these needs and concerns early on, in order to tackle them effectively.
