I teach theory to my own piano students regardless of whether they choose to take the exams or not as I believe it is fundamental to their learning. We work through each grade starting at Grade 1. I use the ABRSM theory workbooks and exam past papers as well as my own notes and resources to teach them.
I am also happy to teach students who want to come to me just for theory lessons. Often this is because they need to take their Grade 5 theory exam in order to progress on to Grade 6+ in their chosen instrument(s), butit doesn't necessarily have to be for this reason.
I choose to teach using the ABRSM syllabus as the ABRSM will only recognise their own Grade 5 theory qualification needed in order to proceed on to Grade 6+ practical exams. This is not the case for other exam boards such as Trinity. However, if a student is not looking to proceed on to 6+ in their practicals exams, I may opt for the Trinity Syllabus instead if I think it will suit the student more.
I have been teaching theory (and piano) privately to both children and adults since 2008. Some I have taught as complete beginners and others have come to me having learnt with other teacher(s) previously. During this time I have entered pupils for both theory and practical ABRSM exams, passing with an average mark of 124/150 (merit) for practical exams and 90/100 (distinction) for theory exams. I also have experience of teaching pupils as young as 3 through games, singing, story-telling and crafts.
