About Evan
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have had five years private teaching experience children right through to mature students. I have experience teaching beginners right through to advance jazz improvisation. I work for the Ecam (every child a musician-Newham) music scheme in which I teach trumpet to year 5 and 6 children in several schools in East London. I have put people through ABRSM classical and jazz exams and have helped people prepare for Undergraduate/Masters level music college auditions for jazz courses at conservatoires including the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
I have performed with my own groups in Rochester International Jazz Festival (USA), Brecon Jazz Festival, Switzerland and major venues in London, Wales and all over Britain. I have played in many big bands including NYJO, The Bobby Lamb Big Band, and The Stuart Fowler Jazz Orchestra. I am a member of the touring band for reggae superstar Max Romeo and also have performed with artists Mikey General and Lee Scratch Perry. I have experience in the session world and have recently recorded for Warner Brothers Music.
- Do you have an up-to-date DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service, formerly CRB) Certificate?
Up to date CRB Certificate.
- Where and with whom did you train?
I studied for four years with Steve Waterman, Gethin Liddington and Geoff Simkins at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. At Trinity College of Music I studied with Chris Batchelor, Julian Siegel, Martin Speake and Simon Purcell. I have had classical training from Kevin Price (Head of Brass-RWCMD). These are all well established professional musicians many with an international reputation.
- Tell me about some of your current students.
One of my current students wishes to be able to play trumpet in his church band. I have been working with him on major scales and writing short melodies for him based on each scale. I give him a new major key every week to work on plus new pieces of music to learn. We have been working on several topics of trumpet technique including tonguing, slurring, and sound/tone. Once he is fluent in all twelve major keys we will work on minor scales and start work on longer melodies and technical exercises. He is making great progress!
I have taught students of all abilities from beginner lessons right through to preparation for music college. I have had students interested in classical technique/performance, jazz improvisation, and theory. I always make sure my students have goals and work with them to reach their targets.

I found Evan to be extremely knowledgeable. He has helped me both with my technique and phrasing. Above all, his classes are convivial. He takes a real interest in your progress and messages you with relevant information between classes. Five stars.
Professional teacher my recomendations
Evan is a fantastic teacher. Not only does he have a wide collection of resources and knowledge to share, but he always makes you feel at ease and eager to come back for more - very important when potentially making some dodgy sounds on a trumpet!
Friendly and engaging teacher who adapted really well to our learning style & timescale for Grade 1. Lessons are always relaxed & enjoyable and Evan is very flexible with timings and location of our sessions which is a huge help.
I met Evan as my friend knew I wanted to learn to play trumpet and bought me a lesson for my Birthday - I had never held a trumpet before!
Evan was an amazing teacher! He is super supportive and patient and quickly tailored the lesson to my learning speed and needs as well as being really great to talk to when my face needed a break!
I would recommend Evan to anyone as he is very knowledgeable, patient and clearly loves teaching all skill levels.Evan is an absolute professional. I was impressed by his method of teaching jazz improvisation. I have no hesitation in recommending him to you!
Evan is teaching me trombone – I'm a beginner but Evan is being kind and recognising the pace that we need to go at for me to reach the grade level. He's great and the lessons are fun too. Thanks Evan!
Evan is a great tutor who will not waste your time. The pace of the lessons is suited to my pace of improvement so I can see a quick progress in my playing which is very satisfying. Evan will prepare a lesson based on your interests and will provide you with any needed materials. Definitely recommended!
Evan is a wonderful trumpet teacher. He explains everything really clearly and listens to and responds to what I am saying, so that the lessons perfectly cater to my preferences and skill level. I have made so much more progress than I was expecting and look forward to every lesson.
Evan is very quick to pin point the areas you need, at your own individual level, to work on. He keeps it interesting and fun. He is an encouraging mentor and also a great guy. Highly recommended.
Evan is a fantastic teacher, very encouraging, reliable, good clear communication and good rapport with the student. He is quite thorough and exacting while still making lessons fun and putting the student at ease. He gets good results from students.
My son really enjoys Evan's classes. He says he's a very good teacher. He especially likes the way Evan asks him to read out the notes before playing them for example. Evan is very patient and encouraging and shows interest in my son, finding ways for him to connect. He also goes out of his way to transpose music my son likes into sheet music that he can learn. He makes the class fun. My son has developed well, gaining a good sound, reading music, developing his ear, and enjoying practicing.
Evan is passionate about the instrument and his music. He plays any genre and will adapt to the level and musical preferences of the student. Evan is demanding but his classes were good fun as well, so I enjoyed while learning and progressing a great deal.
I took 2 years of weekly Trumpet classes with Evan getting some theoretical and practice foundations in improvising, jazz, swing squeezing the odd pop songs in as well. I highly recommend Evan whether you're an adult starting from scratch or brushing up some past skills! Were I still in London, I'd love to have him teach my children.Evan taught me trumpet from absolute beginner to slightly less beginner over about 18 months a few years ago. He's a lovely guy, a patient teacher and very knowledgable on different styles, especially jazz. We were able to work on what was important to me, which kept it fun.
