About Kevin
I am offering in-person instruction to students ages 7 and older at my studio in West Los Angeles (located at 1938 Cotner Ave. Los Angeles, CA 90025), and online instruction to English-speaking students ages 12 and older all over the world.
As a drum teacher, I teach Moeller technique and French technique and go in depth with proper body mechanics, ergonomics, breath regulation and muscle memory development. I specialize in rock, metal and reggae drumming in particular, but I come from a jazz background and have years of experience teaching jazz, funk, rnb/soul/neosoul and various world genres as well. I cover groove/pocket, various approaches to beat placement to develop the right pocket for the right style, rudiments, hybrid rudiments, linear and non-linear phrasing, odd meters and polyrhythms and multi-stroke bass drum technique.
Once I get a sense of the student's level, I customize my instruction to their needs and wants. More often than not, the issues standing in their way have to do with technique, breath, ergonomics and proper body mechanics. No matter the genres of music, I find myself teaching many of the same concepts universally: proper technique/body mechanics, breathing consistently, proper rebounds and allowing the sticks and pedals do the work for you, etc. Technique aside, I cater my musical instruction to the student's desires and will introduce them to related genres/subgenres of music.
My favorite moment of teaching usually happens after about a month or two months of instruction with me, depending on the student. This moment happens when the student's body mechanics start to click and happen naturally after we have spent weeks developing proper technique and undoing bad habits. That is such a golden moment because for the remaining part of instruction with me, their growth will be both rapid and exponential! My other favorite moment is when the student has developed enough vocabulary to start developing their own style/voice on the instrument.
When I was in high school, one of the music instructors asked me to teach an ethnic percussion class to her sixth grade class. I also interned at a nonprofit organization called Rock the Classroom that brought music education to inner city 5th graders. In both cases, I had a blast sharing my knowledge with enthusiastic students and wanted to continue.
I have been teaching freelance consistently for the past 18 years. I also taught at School of Rock West LA part time for eleven of those years. I have taught students of all levels, ages ranging from seven to sixty-five. In my teens, I studied with Mark Craney (Jethro Tull, Jean Luc Ponty, Gino Vanelli, Dweezil and Frank Zappa, Tower of Power), John Molo (Bruce Hornsby, John Fogerty, Moonalice), Gregg Bissonette (David Lee Roth, Maynard Furgason) and Tony Pia (Edgar Winter, Brian Setzer Orchestra, Doobie Brothers). I have played, recorded and toured with many bands and artists over the years including Edge of Paradise, Living Dead Stars, Void Vator, Thunder City Shout, Adrenalin Red, Lettrice Lawrence, John Fogerty, Gene Simmons, Reba MacIntyre, Stephen Stills, Gnarls Barkley, Solomon Burke, etc.

After I get a sense of the student's level, I customize my instruction to their needs and wants. More often than not, the issues standing in their way have to do with technique, breath and proper body mechanics. No matter the genres of music, I find myself teaching many of the same concepts universally: proper technique/body mechanics, breathing consistently, getting out of your own way and allowing the sicks and pedals do the work for you, proper rebounds, etc. Technique aside, I cater my musical instruction to the student's desires and will introduce them to related genres/subgenres of music.
I have worked with students of all levels ranging from total beginners to fellow professional working drummers/percussionists. Some students I've worked with have had a strong technical foundation but a limited musical vocabulary. Other students have had the inverse: strong musical vocabulary and understanding but difficulty in their technical execution. I have taught every kind of student you can imagine in my years of teaching, so no student really surprises me at this point.
The best teachers are the teachers who cater to each individual student's interests and needs, as opposed to a teacher who creates a rigid curriculum that in theory is supposed to apply to every student. When it comes to music, or anything artistic for that matter, the end goal is to be able to create something genuine and original that people can relate to. I am the type of teacher that provides an environment where students are encouraged to find themselves and create their own style and approach to drumming once they've developed their technique and vocabulary.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Potential students should be asking themselves specifically what musical styles they want to learn and what they want to get out of my lessons beyond general improvement. They should be thinking about both long term and short term goals.

Kevin is a master musician and an awesome instructor. He has an easy-going, friendly, encouraging presence, while also being rigorous in making sure his students learn both skills and artistry. He's focused on the joy of making music and the importance of practice and muscle memory. Because he also works as an engineer, he can help drummers understand how their playing will fit into a band or an ensemble. He encourages his students to explore improvisation and other forms of percussion. Best of all, he's hilarious, and there's not much my 13-year-old son enjoys more than his drum lessons with Kevin. We couldn't recommend him more highly.
"Kevin Katich is fucking amazing!"
"We are incredibly honored and grateful to have recorded 17 original tracks with such a talented and hard working musician. Kevin is a very dedicated man that has inspired Figured Out to become better and stronger as professional musicians. He has enriched our music with ideas that are outside the box and has pushed the project towards the very concept we were aiming towards when we initially hired him. It has been a beautiful journey thus far and we hope it is still only the beginning of a magical trip to the stars and beyond! Anyone that has the privilege of working with such talent is quite the lucky human."
“Working with Kevin has been a great experience! It's hard to find people that have such great capabilities, can show up, be professional and have a great attitude about everything. Being a musician is not an easy journey, but it sure is easier if you have great people working with you and Kevin is one of those people!”
“I feel so lucky to have worked with Kevin. Not only is he one of the most talented drummers I've ever met but he's lovely to work with, dedicated, extremely professional, and an all around great dude. I would recommend him to anyone in need of an amazing drummer.”
"Kevin Katich is an absolute pro. Whether it's providing chest-bursting drum beats, textured percussion, or backing vocals, Kevin is a top-notch musician who is versed in all styles, shows up on time, and has a great attitude."
Your review:
Kevin is always smiling and happy to see us. My son has been taking drum lessons from Kevin for about a year and he has learned so much in a short period of time. He’s become a better drummer and is very confident now. We’ve also worked with Kevin in the past on a performance show and he is a pleasure to work with. You’ll always get constructive and informative feedback with a positive message. He is a highly advanced professional drummer and a great person. Kevin has our highest recommendation.
Thank you!I was a student of Kevin's for about five years. During that time, I don't think a single lesson went by without me learning something mind-blowing and simultaneously having loads of fun. Kevin is a teacher who will make you rethink the very concepts of drumming and question everything you've ever learned; his teaching will break down your technique and rebuild it from the ground up, bit by bit, until you become proficient without even noticing.
We really can’t thank Kevin enough. There has been a huge improvement in our sons playing and love for music since starting lessons with Kevin. His knowledge of all sorts of styles and techniques is huge and how he is able to pass that on is very impressive. We have seen a huge jump in our sons playing, attitude and confidence. Thank you Kevin!
To be with such an approachable, fun-loving, yet remarkably talented musician 1-on-1 is a rare experience. With Kevin as my drum teacher for a solid 6 years, I am lucky enough to say I had this experience, learning an incredible amount and gaining a good friend on the way.
Kevin taught me to play a vast array of musical styles. We’d work on a rock song one week, a funk song the next, and a reggae song the next. His diverse approach to learning and appreciating music helped expand my musical horizon. Kevin teaches a lot of high-level technique which can be applied to all types of drumming.
With Kevin as my teacher, I was able to rapidly increase my skill level, going from knowing almost nothing to going on several tours with my band around the country. I’m extremely to have had the privilege of learning from Kevin.Kevin is an incredibly talented experienced drummer and percussionist. He can teach a prolific range of styles and genres and he is great with kids of many different ages. We feel very lucky to have him.
My teenage son has taken drum lessons with Kevin for 5+ years. So so kind, generous and inspirational. We love Kevin!
My name is Patrick Chavez, and before I started taking drum lessons with Kevin I did not have much of a direction to go in musically. Once Kevin became my instructor, my level of playing made massive jumps and I experienced rapid improvement each week. I’ve been Kevin’s student for a few years now, and under his guidance I have become a far better drummer and musician than I ever could’ve ever hoped to be. His teaching is second to none and his positive energy will always inspire you to get better. If you’re looking for a teacher to help you become the best drummer you can possibly be, look no further than Kevin Katich.
