About John
I'm a Sydney-based software engineer and engineering manager with 19+ years of experience building and leading high-impact technology teams. My career has spanned the Australian Bureau of Statistics, a global mobile and web development studio, and nearly a decade at Amazon Japan, where I managed teams of 25+ engineers delivering platforms used by hundreds of thousands of sellers. I currently work at AWS Australia, where I lead a team responsible for testing infrastructure that supports tens of millions of monthly test runs across Amazon worldwide.
Beyond the day job, sharing knowledge has always been a core part of who I am. I founded developer conferences, created and delivered Test-Driven Development boot camps, launched book clubs for engineers, and have mentored software developers and product managers throughout my career. Helping people grow technically is something I find genuinely rewarding.
I hold a Bachelor of Engineering (Software) from the University of Newcastle, Australia, and have made over 200 hiring decisions across a wide range of engineering roles — so I also have a clear sense of what the industry looks for in strong software developers.
Outside of work, I enjoy hiking, game development, music, and board games. I'm a native English speaker and also proficient in Japanese.

With nearly two decades of hands-on software engineering and team leadership experience — including roles at Amazon Japan and AWS Australia — I bring real-world expertise to every lesson. I've spent years mentoring engineers, running TDD boot camps, and leading developer communities, so teaching and knowledge-sharing are things I'm genuinely passionate about.
My approach is practical and learner-centered. Rather than lecturing, I focus on working through real problems together, building your confidence and understanding step by step. I draw on industry-proven practices like Test-Driven Development (TDD), Agile thinking, and clean code principles — the same techniques used by top engineering teams worldwide.
Lessons are flexible, but typically run for one hour. I'm happy to adjust the pace and format to suit your learning style — whether that's working through a project, preparing for a course or interview, or just getting unstuck on something specific.
Who are my lessons for? I cater to a wide range, from beginners curious about programming for the first time, through to university students and working professionals looking to level up their skills. I have particular depth in full-stack development, cloud (AWS), software architecture, and engineering best practices.
