About Leslie
Leslie Elias, director of Grumbling Gryphons Traveling Children’s Theater is a playwright, actress, storyteller and theater director who has been teaching drama in schools, theaters and public venues for over 41 years. In April of 2018, Connecticut Office on the Arts awarded her Arts Hero. She is additionally recognized as both Teaching and Solo Performing Artist with Connecticut Office of the Arts. Ms. Elias has been an Artist-in-Residence in many schools throughout the United States. Grumbling Gryphons won the 2003 Connecticut Governor’s Arts Award.
I love working with actors of all ability levels and experience. I train children, teens and adults, from amateur to professionals. I love teaching and working with people of all types. I love sharing my passion for acting and hope to help you with your needs, interests and goals!
I studied acting, movement and music starting as a child at Fiedel School in Long Island and various theater camps. I traveled weekly for two years in high school to NYC for training at Henry Street Settlement on the Lower East Side followed by an integrative approach to the arts at Sarah Lawrence College where I earned a BA. Throughout my many years as a professional actor, director and drama teacher I have taken master workshops as well as learned a great deal from very talented fellow actors and colleagues in the field.

I begin by discussing the student’s interest and goals to determine what we will concentrate on in our work together.
Then each lesson we work on vocal and physical warm ups and various dramatic techniques. Together we will focus on both monologues and scene work, building skills each lesson and freeing and celebrating the actor within.

Leslie and her Grumbling Gryphons are one of Cornwall's treasures. Just read how many children AND their families have benefited from her brilliant imaginative productions. May she have many more years of exciting events in Cornwall.
Just saw the show at the end of the Gryphons' 2017 summer camp. Those kids were having FUN! Soulful acting, live music, acrobatics, colorful art work and a lot of good energy, as always with the Gryphons!
Grumbling Gryphons delivered a fabulous, immersive theater experience to the children (K-4) at our elementary school - highly recommend as a high quality, professional performance that seeks to involve every student in the show.

I've been involved with the Grumbling Gryphons for 15 years. Leslie is amazing with the kids, and the plays and activities are perfect. The kids at the schools always love the interactive opportunities. The summer camp is also a great way for kids to be introduced to theater, or to return and have fun with a new play every year.
I try to catch the Gryphons camp-productions whenever I can. It's wonderful to see kids, many of whom may never been in a play before, work so well together and take such delight in doing so. I don't know how they pull off such ambitious shows in such short times!
My family thoroughly enjoyed this summer's show put on by Leslie Elias and her children's theater company - what a blast. I took my 5 year old and 8 year old and they were enthralled - they loved the actors (also children) the costumes, especially the dragon, and the overall story (and humor embedded throughout!) What a gift to see how the story interwove modern and traditional storytelling in St. George and the Dragon...thank you all!
