About Richard

I have been a professional actor for 50 years. I have performed in 7 Broadway shows, 5 National Tours as well as many regional theatres, off-Broadway and industrials. Since 1991 I have been a successful Broadway director, teacher and writer. As a successful professional on both sides of the footlights, I have an insight and understanding of the craft of acting not found in many other professionals. I have been teaching my class for 28 years and I currently direct and write for theatres throughout the country. Check out my website: RichardSabellico.com

The greatest satisfaction I derive from my work as a teacher is the growth and development I observe in the actor; their pattern of maturation and the ease with which they move forward in their career brings me GREAT joy.

I started teaching when it was pointed out to me by Arthur Laurents that I had great gifts at my disposal as well as hard earned knowledge not learned in schools and it was time I gave back to the aspiring theatrical commuinity.

8 years of study with Wynn Handman; New York's finest acting teacher and founder of the American Place theare.  (Who is stilll teaching at age 95.)  Aside from working on Broadway with great performers, I was mentored by Arthur Laurents (author of West Side Story, Gypsy among many others) and studied dance and singing since 1970 with many varied professionals, some still with us and many long gone.

But the gretest knowledge I have gained is from 50 years of working experience with the top professionals of the theatre.

Evaluating their level of expertise, asking about their goals, their favorite type of theatre and their work ethic.  Once I have established the above, I first ask them to present their current material to me (both musical and non-musical), I work with and direct them in what they've presented and then cull from my vast library the type of materials I think would show them off to their best advantage.

From Tony Award winning Broadway actors to college students just cutting their teeth in a very difficult professional

In hiring any teacher or professional, you will need at least one session to determine your compatibilty with each other.  If you "click" with a good teacher consider yourself lucky.  Then find a consistent schedule to persue your studies.  Since we work in a highly subjective business you need to start trusting your gut instincts when deciding who to work with and who to pass by.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do they want.  How do they think they can acheive  their goals and making a clear assessment of their talent.

A question I always ask my students is "Why do you want to be in this business?"  Their answer helps me divise the  course of action in our work. Surprisingly, few people give me what I consider the "right" answer.  And I have learned over the years, this is only one right answer.
