About John
As a Peace Corps volunteer from 2018 to 2020 I lived, worked, and taught in a rural jungle community of Panama called Ciri de los Sotos. Over 50% of my service was in the classroom, teaching everything from English to environmental sciences. Teaching in a community with no electricity and a weather-dependent schedule (many of the 90 students can't walk to class when the rivers swell after a rain) taught me resilience, adaptability, and self-reliance. I have been using these skills to teach since high school. In addition to a full class load of APs, being cross country team captain, and having a healthy social life, I also tutored fellow classmates, middle school, and elementary students in topics ranging from english to calculus. I find satisfaction in sitting down with someone and helping them understand something, approaching it from different angles until we find one that clicks. It is my experience that a diligent yet easy-going and empathetic attitude works well to motivate learners to achieve. I have had success with all ages and levels of students by staying relaxed and keeping learning fun. Also, teaching in the US and in Panama taught me how to manage parental expectations and get families involved in their students' work from the beginning, and keep them interested and involved in the learning process. I have experience in classroom and administration for K-12.
I want to share my passion for nature in general, and earth sciences specifically, with students. The topics covered in earth and space sciences meshes well with physics, another passion of mine. For example, earthquakes, sediment transport, and solar radiation from nuclear fusion (earth and space science themes) would be impossible to teach without understanding transverse vs longitudinal waves, density, projectile motion, and valence electrons (physics themes). I know that STE(A)M teachers are desperately needed in many places, and I wish to fill that need.
