About Sarah

Whether it's making our way through the student's first chapter book or preparing a college essay for submission to a publisher, I am fully committed to helping students enjoy the process of learning while producing their best work!

I have pursued tutoring positions during every stage of my own education, from high school through my post-graduate work, and have consistently been working with students for the past 12 years.

During my own time in school, from high school through post-grad work, I always enjoyed the benefits of collaborative learning. As a tutor, I do not only guide or assist students, but try to create a collaborative environment that best suits the student and allows them to enjoy the process of education.

I have more than a decade of experince working with elementary, middle school, and university students in reading, writing, history, grography, civics, creative writing, and other subjects in the humanities.

I began tutoring in hig school and continued over the next decade, helping students of various age levels, demographics, and education histories. I also have extesnive essay workshopping experience.

Typically, I like to meet with students (and if applicable, their parent/guardian) and have a candid conversation about what they expect from a tutor and the tutoring process. I also like to talk about what each student likes and dislikes about school, their work, and their favorite activities in general so I can best understand their work process, and how I can create a positiive work environment.

For younger students, this may include learing through songs to help with memory, including physical movement or vivid visual cues to help with engagement, or simply by committing to a specific pace of learning to help with confidence and comfort.

For older students, this meeting will consists of conversations about how independently they prefer to work, the amout of personal communication they expect, reviews of deadlines, schedules, and general expectations.

After this conversation, if the student feels comfortable with the tutoring relationship, I like to have a shorter initial session focused on their work. If, after the initial meeting and session, the student wants to continue working with me, I'm happy to schedule follow up appointments.

I have worked with students as young as 7 and several who were pursuing writing classes in their retirement. I have worked in urban multi-lingual schools, on college campuses, and at a rural elementary school in Apalachia. I've enjoyed working with students in every location, at every age, and look forward to working with a diverse array of students in the future!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How comfortable do you feel asking your teachers for help? Is there anything I can do to help you reach out?

What are your strengths at school, in or outside the classroom? Your best subjects? Are you in any clubs? On any teams?

What do you enjoy in school, even in the subjects you like least? Do you like group work, incorporating games into lessons?

Do you think there's anything you like about your favorite subjects that might help you in the ones you're struggling with? Even if not, what is it you love about your favorite subjects?

What do you want me to help you with, other than just your grades? Can you think of a specific problem that's holding you back? Can I help you enjoy the subject, even if it's hard?
