About Shannen

My service stands out because I am not only a master of the skills in Secondary Education (I have an MS in Curriculum and Instuction and a BS in Secondary Education English), but I continue to hone my stills with regular professional development. I am a published novelist, a trailblazer (I helped start a two schools), advisor for travel assistance - People to People Student Ambassadors Travel to Australia, and Brown Deer High Schools' Diversity Club Travel to Jamacia. Not to mention the other things I've managed to accomplish in my nearly 20 years of teaching.

I do not have any children of my own so, I emesh myself into the training of life skills and mentoring my at risk students. I focus on mediation and advising them for some whose skills are limited. Plus, I focus on literary and business writing and editing, and cultually relevant pedogogy to keep me focused on not just becoming a better educator, but pushing my students to be all that they can be in a society that is overwhelming.

First, I need to talk to the student - get to know them.  You can't just, start off with a lesson until you know about them as a human being.  I as the student to journal their thoughts on a particular topic, depending on some of the ideas I have received from our conversation.  Then, I start with an entry level quiz on the subject we need to review so that I can see what level they are on.  You never want to start your tutee too high or too low in their stubject matter, as you may risk offending them or scaring them away (they may feel the work is too complicated).

Not for individual lessons, no.  I do 1/2 hour or hour sessons.  If the tutee wants to go longer, that cuts into other time I may have planned for someone or something else, so I add overtime.
