About Deirdre
I’ve been teaching 6th grade English and social studies for 3 years. I have the drive and desire to help my students to truly dive into the content they’re studying, and love finding creative ways to get information to stick. I have experience with all sorts of students of different abilities and levels of interest. While teaching is my passion, English was my first love. I was an English major at Rutgers University before pursuing my masters in Education. I’ve taken courses on Shakespeare’s plays, 19th Century British Fiction, Post-Modern American Poetry, creative writing (fiction, blogging, and poetry), in addition to a variety of standard expository writing classes, while studying the features of poetry and prose. Not only do I understand the inner workings of writing and literature from a reader’s/writer’s perspective, I know the best ways to frame concepts in order to solidify my students’ understanding.

I like to try to specifically target the needs of each student, so I usually start with a questionnaire. I like to get a baseline to assess where the student is, what they’re struggling with, and come up with a plan to hone in on those specific skills in each session. Oftentimes, students struggle because of a sense of apathy that comes along with having a difficult time. I like to encourage my students and motivate them in a way that inspires them not to give up or lose hope in their ability.
