About Pero
P. J. is a graduate of Carson-Newman University. There, he studied the psychology and neuroscience of learning. During his studies, he volunteered as a tutor for inner-city youth in Knoxville, TN, to apply what he learned.
With over five years of tutoring experience with youth ranging from 8 to 18, P. J. is well-equipped to help with any homework problem in Math, Science, English, and Reading.
P. J. is passionate about helping students who are not receiving enough one-on-one attention.
P. J.'s audio quality is professional, and he has a writing pad hooked up to his computer to be able to illustrate quickly and naturally. He has an optional webcam, for students who prefer face-to-face engagement.
I began tutoring college students in general chemistry at Maryville College in August of 2020, my sophomore year. I won an award in Chemistry earlier that year, so I was chosen to tutor my class peers. In 2021, I began volunteering at Emerald Youth Foundation's Just Lead program. This program was an after-school program for inner-city middle- and high-school students. There, I taught as an Education AmeriCorps tutor for two years. I spent over 2,000 hours tutoring middle and high schoolers in mathematics and science. Over the years, I have had private chess and mathematics students.
I graduated high school as Valedictorian, scored a composite 35 on the ACT, and have completed advanced mathematics and chemistry courses at the college level. These experiences have allowed me to be well-prepared for high-school level work in mathematics and science, up to and including AP calculus.

When working with a new student, I go through a brief assessment of their current progress in the subject we will be targeting. This helps us both determine where they require the most help, so that we can make good use of their time. This is the free 30-minute consultation. I try to end the consultation by helping them with one problem they find confusing or difficult, so that they can see for themselves if they will learn more easily as I help them.
I have worked with students ranging from 8 years old to 18 years old. I have worked with students struggling with daily math homework, and with students preparing for the ACT. Occasionally, I have worked with college students who get stuck on a particular calculus problem here and there.
If you are looking for help, you already have the attitude of a good learner. Find a tutor who has time enough to prepare for your sessions and cares to make them fun and challenging, and you will reach what you are aiming for.
There is one thing you should always expect - lots of practice. You only get good at what you practice, and any good teacher will expect you to demonstrate what they have taught you several times.
Not too recent, but in 2022 when I was tutoring at the Just Lead program, one of the students I was tutoring showed a giftedness for mathematics that had not been recognized.
I worked frequently with him, setting him challenges and giving him points for correct answers. In 3 months he went from not being able to add two-digit numbers to consistently adding 10-digit numbers perfectly, and using his adding skills to multiply 3-digit numbers.
I had him demonstrate adding to his 3rd grade class, and he was very proud to be able to do it and explain it. I think he liked math a lot more after being recognized for his talent.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would want the student to be able to tell me:
1) What is the subject they want to grow in.
2) Why they want to grow in that subject.
3) What would they consider success within one month of starting tutoring?
