About Wesley

I've always had great math teachers. And because of that, I've always excelled at and loved math. However, I understand that a lot of students lack teachers that inspire them to learn. Many teachers can be combative with their students, too, which only makes it harder for those students to succeed. In the absence of a good teacher, I want to teach you how to succeed in math. I hope to help raise your scores in class and on the SATs, and I want to make math into something you can enjoy.

Though I lack certifications—and am new to tutoring as a business—I am not inexperienced. I tutored several students during my senior year of high school through the National and National Technical Honor Societies, and in my high school's Network Technology classes, my peers regularly looked to me for help, and I was always willing to give them that help.

I graduated in 2020 with a 1320 SAT, 4.05 GPA, and a 3 (the highest in my class) on the AP Calculus AB exam.

I've always enjoyed sharing things I find interesting with my peers, but it was the National Honor Society that really pushed me to become a tutor. I had tutor through the program as mandatory community service... and I found that I loved it!

Throughout high school, I always took the most rigorous math classes I could and excelled in all of them. I've also worked at a summer camp for the past few years, so I have a fair amount of experience working with kids in middle and high school.

When working with a new student, I like to start by looking at assignments or problems that have been giving them trouble. From there, I want to see how much they know about the problems, so I don't waste time teaching them what they already know. That's no fun for anyone. From there, rather than just telling them exactly how to get the answer, I help my students figure it out themselves by providing some background information and asking them the questions that lead to the answer. It is my belief that by personally deriving not just the answer, but the process to reach the answer, a student will retain far more information and enjoy a deeper sense of pride when solving problems.

After that, it's repetition, repetition, repetition, until they feel that they have a solid understanding of the topic.

I've worked with a LOT of high school students. Some worked as hard as they could, others chose to do the bare minimum, and others still reached for the stars but were inhibited by conditions like ADD and ADHD. I liked working with all of them.

For the past month, I've been craving ice cream—but I can't eat it, because I'm lactose intolerant. I've tried oat milk ice cream, too, and it was alright... but as someone used to eating Ben and Jerry's, it just wasn't the same.

Then, yesterday, when I was with my girlfriend, she surprised me with a pint of Dairy Free Phish Food Ben & Jerry's! I was SO happy! I didn't even know Ben & Jerry's HAD anything dairy free! We sat down to eat it while we watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and I think I was the most overjoyed person on the planet.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'd just recommend that they gather a collection of work showing what they're struggling with. That should give the teacher a good idea of how best to help.
