About Michael
Hi!
I am Michael Braselton. I retired from teaching in Texas Public Education in 2016, and then worked until April of 2019 as a math curriculum specialist. I have found over the last 3 years that I really miss the joy of helping students learn math and watching them be successful in doing mathematics.
I believe that every person has the ability to learn, understand, and use mathematics. My experience includes 27 years of teaching Grade 6 through High School mathematics in public education. In addition, I designed and created mathematics curriculum for home schools, charter schools, and online curriculum.
Every student has their own set of knowledge and skills, plus their unique history and attitudes about learning math. I am very experienced with knowing how students learn mathematics, researching to create a plan of action for each student, then using the plan that leads to success and mastery.
I use what I call "the gift of parable". I take and use ideas, stories, movies, other academic subjects, and history to make connections about mathematics that students can relate to. From these parables, students can begin to understand mathematical concepts, and then continue to return to these parables as needed.
I love teaching math, and live for the moments when each student has a breakthrough: Whether it's finally understanding the concept that has been a struggle, learning how to take and pass exams, overcoming an overall fear of mathematics, or finally developing a joy for just doing math or using math to solve problems.
I love being with children, teens and young adults. In addition to my mathematics teaching experience, I have also worked in various children's ministries as a room worker and worship leader. Finally, I am "Pah-Pah" to 4 amazing grand kids. Being a minister and grandfather has been the best soil for learning how to help and speak into others, especially elementary level children.
