About Ashley
I am a student at the University of Georgia, with a double major in History and Linguistics. I'm taking some time off to have a daughter and to be with her, but I still love my subjects. I am constantly reading and collecting new books on different aspects, viewpoints, and opinions.
My close friend is a political affairs major. She knows everything about what is going on in the world currently, but not what happened 30-40 years ago to set some things in motion. I help her out every now and then. I've also been tutored myself. My tutors had very different ways of teaching and going over information which started me thinking about how many students they must have each taught to fine tune their own processes.
I have been working on my double History and Linguistics major for 3 years now. I also grew up with a teacher as a mother and my sister became a kindergarten teacher, which is really as much fun as teaching gets. Any time I can't think of something for a student, I get their advice.

I try to figure out where to focus. I ask the student what they think they need work on, then make a general quiz to double check them. After that, I like making different mini-projects and coming up with fun ideas on how to help students remember everything. Everyone learns in different ways, and its fun for me to get as creative as I can to make the learning process as interesting as possible.
I've mostly worked with peers. I have 3 nieces though and sometimes my eldest niece, who has trouble with reading especially, asks for help because she knows that I'm one of the few adults who can make it into a game.
You don't have to settle. And if you do, be as open about everything as you can. If you don't like something, or a way that the tutor explains something, tell them. Their job is to help you learn, so don't waste your money on them if you aren't learning anything. Ask as many questions as you want until you fully understand the material. Again, the tutor is supposed to help you, so don't worry about being a bother or annoying with having them explain something for the 14th time.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about whether they are just looking for someone to help them right before a test, or if perhaps they might need someone to help more regularly just to make sure information stays in. Does the student want someone to make them sit down and review by themselves? or just need someone to point them in the right direction rather than explain out every detail of the Civil War?
