About Jonathn
My fundamental principle in tutoring is to help my students dig deep and fully understand the conceptuals behind a given topic, something I believe is more important than any amount of technical jargon or formulas. I see tutoring as an act of translation, where I adapt to my student's mode of thinking and translate my understanding of a concept into perhaps a simpler or more complex idea that the student can grasp. Sometimes this involves building models to explain abstract ideas, or using a whiteboard to communicate my thinking process. As I have worked with elementary to high school students, I have experience with a variety of learning styles, as well as a wide range of subjects, so I occasionally also combine big ideas as more of an 'interdisciplinary' approach to learning, something that students can carry beyond the classroom into future endeavors.
I really enjoy seeing my student's faces light up when they finally understand a concept. I think there's a lot of value in basic education and general subject requirements, as even those that might seem like 'useless' subjects (like geometry or statistics) do actually have value in the real world, perhaps not in their mechanics, but as methods of maturing one's mind and ability to think, which can be utilized across any future goals. I love spreading not only the underlying beauty behind many subjects, but also this link between knowledge and application, helping my students appreciate the importance of education.
