About Dana
Hello, I am Dana Richardson an award winning contemporary artist based in the Central Coast with a Bachelor in Fine Arts degree from the School of Art Institute of Chicago. I have been the instructor of California Painting Lessons, private online and traveling painting classes for over a decade. I specialize in teaching non-toxic, healthier painting practices with a focus on oil painting, acrylic, gouache and illustration techniques. I offer three primary areas of focus in my classes - figurative and portrait painting, landscape painting and abstract painting.
I am a friendly, patient and outgoing art teacher. I encourage students of all disciplines and experience levels to experiment with self expression and develop a thorough understanding of traditional painting techniques and feel empowered to find their own artistic voice. I encourage the use of the safest, budget friendly, professional quality artist paints from store bought to made from scratch at home!
Students will learn the basic painting techniques including composition, form, light and shadow and basic color theory. More advanced classes are also offered to teach material manipulation, texture, expressionism and mixed media.
If your looking to start a career as an artist I can also offer helpful advice from gallery submissions to building a successful online art store.

I recieved my BFA degree from School of the Art Institute of Chicago. I began volunteering in south side Chicago with at risk youth teaching art classes in their schools where otherwise funding for arts had not been available. I also worked in Orange County as a middle school art instructor for several years. Since 2008 I have taught group workshops with the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, Monterey Museum of Art and private workshops in the Cebtral Coast and Bay Area.
