About Alex
I began tutoring students in college as I found that teaching someone else also helped me gain a better understanding of concepts. After seeing the amazing results I was able to help students achieve, it became something that I love to do. For 5 years I worked as a formulation chemist applying graduate level chemistry concepts to real world situations, and my personal skills help me convey abstract concepts in a way that students can better grasp. My excitement and passion for chemistry lies in the line of thinking that goes into solving problems, and I have even more fun with it when I can inspire that in students as they begin to understand topics that were previously confusing.

-I've found that the most effective method is typically to start by asking the student to show me how they think they would approach a particular problem so I can see where their misunderstandings lie. Then, we will work backwards to understand the concepts as they relate to their relevant applications.
-A typical lesson plan would include a variety of practice problems followed by the conceptual background so the student can understand how to use the relevant information to solve problems.
-I've found that the way chemistry is typically taught tends to leave out the WHY. When students can understand why they are doing something and why an equation has particular variables or rules, they don't have to rely as heavily on memorization, and are better able to figure out the means to a solution even if they can't remember exact details. I've had students turn a C into an A after just a few sessions, and they like the way I use analogies to explain such abstract concepts in a visualizable way.
-Lessons are for high school and college level students studying all types of chemistry.
