About Samuel
I'm a fourth-year Chemistry PhD candidate at the University of Leeds, where my research focuses on computational chemistry and the design of new ligands for sustainable battery recycling. Before starting my PhD in 2022, I completed an MChem (Master of Chemistry) at the University of Manchester, graduating with Upper Second Class Honours. I've co-authored two peer-reviewed publications and presented my research at conferences hosted by the Royal Society of Chemistry and the University of Leeds. Chemistry is a subject I live and breathe every day.
Alongside my research, I've spent two years as an Assistant Laboratory Demonstrator in the undergraduate teaching labs at Leeds, where I worked one-to-one and in small groups with first- and second-year chemistry students, helping them understand practical techniques and the theory behind them. I've also worked seasonally as an activities instructor for children aged 5–14, and previously tutored a GCSE Chemistry student who achieved a grade 7.
My goal as a tutor is to make sure students walk into their exams feeling prepared, confident, and curious about the subject rather than intimidated by it.

I'm a fourth-year Chemistry PhD student based in Leeds, with hands-on experience tutoring GCSE Chemistry. I offer one-to-one lessons in GCSE Maths, GCSE Chemistry, and A-Level Chemistry, helping students preparing for exams and build stronger foundations in the subject.
I believe the best learning happens when students genuinely understand the "why" behind a concept rather than memorising it. My lessons combine clear explanations with worked examples, past-paper practice, and plenty of opportunity for the student to talk through their reasoning. I adapt my pace and style to the individual: some students need help cracking tricky topics, others want structured exam preparation, and some simply want to build confidence before a test.
For Chemistry, I draw on my research background to bring topics to life and show how the content connects to real science. For Maths, I highlight how fundamental it is to everyday life and how it underpins the sciences.
Lessons typically run for 60 minutes, though I'm happy to arrange for longer or shorter lessons. Before our first lesson, I'll ask a few questions about the student's exam board, current level, and any specific topics they'd like to focus on, so I can plan accordingly.
My lessons are for GCSE students (typically Years 10–11) studying Maths or Chemistry and A-Level students (Years 12–13) studying Chemistry.
