About Stefano
About the Tutor
Stefano Azario is a photographer with a long, award-winning career in fashion and advertising, working internationally for major brands and publications. In recent years, his focus has shifted towards more personal, place-based work and towards sharing a lifelong engagement with photography as a practice rather than a product.
He began photographing at the age of eleven with a Zenit E and soon after taught himself to work in the darkroom. That early fascination with film, light, and printing has remained central to his practice, whether working with analogue or digital tools.
Stefano’s teaching is grounded in experience, curiosity, and attention. He approaches photography not as a set of rules to be mastered, but as a way of seeing and being present. In 2024, he completed an NCFE Award in Education and Training, deepening his ability to structure learning around individual needs and different levels of experience.

I offer two- and three-day analogue black and white photography workshops, structured as four or six half-day sessions with evening debriefs. More info at (concealed information)
We begin on the first morning by diving straight into ideation and visualisation. We’ll look closely at your camera and discuss how to get the best from it, as well as from the specific film you’re using. The aim is not technical overload, but understanding your tools well enough that they support—rather than interrupt—your creative attention.
We then head out to photograph in and around Carrara and northern Tuscany: the marble quarries, coastline, mountains, woods, rivers, and nearby medieval villages. The emphasis is on the experience of photographing—placing exposure, composition, lenses, and filters where they quietly serve intent.
Each evening we regroup to review the day’s work, discuss questions that arose, and address anything not fully covered in the field.
On the second day, you’ll learn how to process black and white film with care and precision, focusing on achieving the best possible grain structure and tonal range from your negatives. We then move into the darkroom, where you’ll make contact prints and begin conversations around editing, structure, and narrative.
From there, I guide you step by step through the process of making finished darkroom prints.
By the end of the workshop, you will:
Understand how to photograph a chosen scene on film with a clear sense of the expected result
Be confident processing black and white film independently
Have the knowledge to set up a simple home darkroom or work comfortably in a rental darkroom
Leave with prints that reflect both technical control and personal intention.

Stefano is the definition of balance.
Technically precise and artistically brilliant.
I spent years with Stef in a creative capacity and nobody has ever come close to his love of light and embracing of beautiful imperfection.
To study with him is the chance of a lifetime.Stef and I met during his time in Indonesia many years ago when I was just beginning to get into photography. He gave me confidence early on to be curious without hesitation and continues to support the development of my visual practise as I wrap up my Photography studies in the Netherlands. Stefano has closely guided me through the conceptualisation and practicalities behind the dark room printing for my final project. I have so much fun with stef, He is a cultured person with the ability to connect through and beyond photography.
Stefano is not only a wonderful teacher, but a deeply curious and knowledgeable person. Stefano guided me through my very first dark room prints in Milan with great patience, all the while talking me through the extensive history of BnW printing. We talked about varied printing practices from Ansel Adams to W Eugene smith to Moriyama. This was one of the richest experiences of my life, I would recommend it to anyone interested in photography.
Stefano is an exceptionally enthusiastic and gifted tutor with a rare eye for photography. He instinctively knows how to capture the right moment, makes it all look effortless under any circumstances. Of course he has been around, had an incredible career and impressive portfolio to show for it. On top of that he is very clear and direct in his communication, which made all the technical stuff sound very logic, it just all clicked immediately. I feel super lucky that he joined superprof to share his wisdom with an enthusiasm that is contagious: good humor & taste for food (always a plus), and deeply committed to the craft. He made me see the light (in photography:-). SUPER highly recommend him:-)
Stefano has been a great tutor to me! I felt so supported and encouraged by him and have made some of my best work to date. His experience in the industry was super cool to hear about too. Thank you Stefano!
