About James

Whether you want to raise your GCSE/A-Level Biology grade, fine-tune your research proposal, feel more comfortable in lessons, or deep dive into the latest research, I can help.

For the last decade, I have designed viruses, cells and organisms mainly for gene therapy. Working for start-up Biotech companies and the University of Oxford. I am in the process of starting up my own Biotech while looking after my 5-year-old.

I have tutored and mentored young scientists for years and love seeing people succeed.

I live in South Oxford but work extensively in the Headington, Botley and Abingdon areas. If our schedules align, I would prefer to teach in person. Online lessons are, of course, available!

I have an enhanced- DBS certificate, which I can provide if requested. I offer and tailor lessons to those in school, university or those simply curious about Biology.

GCSE/A-LEVEL STUDENTS
I offer structured lessons in which we review content, followed by exercises (which could include past paper questions) specific to your exam board specifications and curriculum.

A typical lesson will look like:
Going over previous content: 5-10 minutes
Most improvement will come from reviewing the content from the last lesson. I prefer to do this at the beginning when brains are fresher. For exam prep, we will review previous answers to past paper questions so that you can answer them in the style needed to get the marks.

Content: 30–40 minutes
Engagement is the key to getting the most out of our lessons. I will lead you to the answers, not lecture, to find out where any lack of understanding is present. Whatever pace we need to go at, no matter how many different ways we need to go through concepts, we will find the style of learning that works for you to have that 'Ah ha' moment.

Communication (Exit ticket): 5-10 minutes
The best scientists are highly effective communicators. They can explain ideas to a five-year-old. During this part of the class, through exercises, you'll be explaining to me the content we have just gone through. This will cement what we have learnt in your head. For exam prep, this could take the form of exam-style questions.

UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
My main focus for university students is molecular and synthetic biology, from plant science to virology. I have real-life experience I can offer if you want to help unpick a particular lecture, structure a realistic research proposal, or effectively present your work. I will follow your lead to help you realise the career you want.

FOR THOSE INTERESTED
For those wanting to feel more comfortable in lessons or better understand the biological world, we can have some real fun! Perform experiments to break apart concepts and gain a deeper level of understanding. Explore the latest developments and trends. Talk to researchers about their work. Hopefully, I can impart some of my enthusiasm and knowledge to you!
