About Segun
A native of Fort Greene by way of Ekiti, Segun Akande is a first-generation Nigerian-American born actor. He attended Xavier High School in New York City, where he served as student body President and was a standout athlete in football, basketball, and rugby. Despite suffering a devastating injury his senior year, he was able to continue his football career at Duke University, majoring in political science. After graduation, he transitioned into acting, and began working immediately on stage, particularly in New York at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and D.C. at Arena Stage. His performance in the short film titled Dirt played globally at major film festivals to critical acclaim. He then went on to star in the film Burning Sands. In 2018, he made his off-Broadway debut originating the principal role of Obinna in the Homecoming Queen at the Atlantic Theatre Company to rave reviews. He recently completed a star turn in the HBO hit Random Acts of Flyness, and God’s Time, is currently streaming on Hulu. Akande has also appeared in stage productions of Ruined and A Perfect Ganesh.
