About Kayla E

Currently an Elementary Teacher and High School Math Tutor, I value the importance of doing what's best for my students! What does this look like? First, I value students' first teaching method. I like to get to know my students' needs and interests before I start to plan my lessons! Second, I value independence. I value my students growing from needing my help by learning strategies and techniques to utilizing their strategies and techniques on their own. Last, I value engagement. I believe as a teacher it is important to conduct lessons that are engaging and interacting. Students need to be a part of the lessons rather than being lectured to.

Do you want to help your child grow in reading Guided Reading books in grades K-3? Are you having a hard time getting your child to enjoy reading? Well, I am here to help! I love to keep my lessons fun and engaging! I love to get students up and moving to learn. I love utilizing online games/tools to connect the students with their learning. Throughout my years of teaching, I have learned about some fun interactive game-based activities to have a blended classroom. Plus, I have online games that I utilize through PowerPoint to teach. I use a variety of engaging techniques to keep the lesson moving. We are always doing something different! For my guided reading lessons, I utilize a 2 DAY LESSON PLAN that I have created for my district. Before starting the lesson, I like to conduct a running record on a book based on a guided reading level to see where they are independently reading and then I will do my lessons based on the level above. For Levels A-C this is the steps I take. First, I start the lesson by completing 2 activities for the sound focus. Then, I move into introducing the sight words from the word. After, introduce the new book and have them read it afterwards. Last, I have the student practice writing letters, CVC words, or answer comprehension questions. On Day 2, we work on sounds first. Next, we work on the sight words again. Then, we reread the book. Last, we work on a guided writing sentence. For Levels D-I, I complete the same 2 day lesson plan pattern besides I work on CVC words, CCVC words or CVCC words and we work on different comprehension skills to better help their comprehension skills. For Levels J+, I have a 2 day lesson plan, but the layout looks different. I work on fluency skills, introducing a chapter book, provide guided questions and complete writing comprehension activities. For Phonics/Spelling, I like to conduct a spelling analysis to pinpoint where the student is at. After pinpointing the information, I like to utilize Heggerty and UFLI Phonics Lessons with additional resources/games of my own for the engagement. Heggerty is a phonemic awareness program I utilize that is a 5 DAY PROGRAM that is around 15 minutes and UFLI is a phonics program I utilize that is a 2 DAY LESSON PLAN that is around 30 minutes. Phonics/Spelling lessons would be around 45-60 minutes. For Science of Reading/Decodable Reading Lessons, I utilize a lesson plan template I created for my district. This lesson plan is a 2 DAY lesson plan. When planning a Decodable Reading Lesson, I like to conduct a running record on a book based on a phonics skills (Alphabet, CVC, Digraphs/Blends/Double Letters, CVCe, R-controlled/Ending Blends and Vowel Teams. After figuring out which phonics skills they need to work on, I will grab a book on that phonics skill. For each Level, the activities stay the same, but the phonics skills changes. On Day 1, I complete a phonemic awareness activity, sight word introduction activities, phonics review (previously learned phonics skills), introduce new phonics skill, practice spelling and then introduce and read the book. On Day 2, I complete a phonemic awareness activity, sight word review activities, phonics review (previously learned phonics skill), phonics game (based on new phonics skill), practice spelling and then introduce and read the book.
