About Kori
I am currently a graduate student in historical musicology at McGill, where I study the history of music and math. Prior to moving here, I went to undergrad at Oberlin Conservatory in the US and Oxford University in the UK. I also served two years teaching with Americorps in Cleveland, OH.
In 2018, I became handicapped. Very long story short, I had to relearn how to do everything, from walking to talking. And especially reading. Had it happened to me at a younger age, I might have moved on and chosen a new career path. However, someone somewhere years ago instilled in me a passion and a drive for what I do and I'm so thankful that they did because otherwise I wouldn't have known to fight for what I was losing. Learning and studying to me is akin to breathing; it's the light that fills my day.
And so I opened a book and began to retype. And retype. I retyped until McGill saw that fire in me and took a chance. I continue to retype all week every week, for it's the only way I can read dense material. And someday I will be the first professor who has to retype her students papers to grade them, but that fire inside me, the genuine love and passion for my field, will never die out.
I teach because I want to be that "someone somewhere years ago" for you. Your fire may look different from mine, but I'm here to help you find it.

I have experience teaching 5th-11th grade, but am comfortable working with all ages. My lesson plans vary depending on the goals and needs of my scholars. Typically, if my scholar is a bit older, I would spend the first session discussing these goals as well as gauging where my scholar is at and then present a game-plan for them to approve/tweak during the next session. This works particularly well for maths, as many scholars can get bogged down by how quickly mathematical subjects build on themselves and it can be encouraging for such scholars to see "a way out" of the mess (because there ALWAYS is one!).
My training as an educator was through Americorps, and as such, my methods and ideologies reflect a growth mindset and strive to reinforce the pillars of social and emotional learning. Above all, I teach because I love what I study and I'm passionate about sharing that love with the world.
