About Nicole

I am a dance educator and performance artist whose work integrates holistic, somatic, and inclusive movement practices. I create brave, exploratory spaces where movers of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds can engage in embodied expression and deepen self-understanding.

I earned my BFA in Dance from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where I trained with a diverse range of choreographers and participated in repertory projects. I performed with Group Motion Dance Company under the mentorship of the late Manfred Fischbeck, experiences that shaped my approach to improvisation and collaborative performance.

At the heart of my work are the cultural and somatic philosophies of the Katherine Dunham Technique. I am a committed member of the Dunham community and continue to deepen my practice through the pursuit of Dunham Technique Teacher Certification.

In California, I teach inclusive classes and workshops in Afro-Modern Dance, Creative Movement, and theater-based practices such as Narrative Expression Through Movement. I also collaborate with theater organizations as a performer and movement specialist, developing choreography and movement direction rooted in emotional, narrative, and cultural context.

My teaching emphasizes intentional skill-building and collaboration, guiding dancers to connect technique with personal expression. Across my work, I champion movement as an inclusive practice that fosters self-awareness, cultural understanding, and community.

My teaching approach is student-centered, creative, and grounded in embodied learning. I believe dance is not only about technique, but also about developing confidence, musicality, self-awareness, creativity, and an authentic artistic voice. I meet each student where they are and adapt my teaching to their individual learning style, goals, and experience.

Teaching Methods & Techniques
I draw from Afro-Modern dance practices, Katherine Dunham Technique, contemporary dance, improvisation, somatic awareness, and creative movement. I use clear demonstrations, verbal imagery, repetition, hands-on exploration when appropriate, and individualized feedback to help students understand both the “how” and the “why” behind movement.

Typical Lesson Plan
Lessons generally begin with grounding, alignment, and a physical warm-up before progressing into technique-specific exercises. Depending on the student’s goals, we may work on strength, flexibility, turns, jumps, musicality, choreography, improvisation, or performance quality. We then apply those skills through phrase work or creative exploration, ending with reflection and specific takeaways for continued practice.

What Sets Me Apart
I bring a combination of professional dance experience, inclusive teaching practice, and culturally rooted movement knowledge. My approach encourages students to build technical skills while also understanding their bodies, developing confidence, and finding personal meaning in movement. I create a supportive environment where curiosity and individuality are valued alongside discipline and growth.

Who My Lessons Are For
I work with beginning through advanced dancers, children, teens, adults, and students preparing for auditions, performances, college dance programs, or continued technical development. I also welcome students interested in Afro-Modern dance, Katherine Dunham Technique, contemporary movement, improvisation, creative expression, and developing a stronger mind-body connection.
