About John

- What kind of experience do you have?

I have been teaching for the past 8 years, have experience doing workshops with children from the ages of twelve-to-eighteen, and have led workshops with primary school children of all ages. As a woodwind tutor I have worked for; Kingston Music service, A to G Music School in Sutton, and Newham Council's Every Child A Musician Scheme, currently I work for Musico South agency and Kelvin Grove Primary School ontop of freelance teaching.

Additionally, as a freelance musician I have;

-toured with Viva Productions show 'Blues on The Move' (2013-2015),

-gigged extensively with various worldmusic/jazz/folk bands including; Croatian contemporary jazz orchestra 'Mimika', klezmer band 'Oysland', Balkan band 'Raka', Guinean Griot Mosi Conde, and Nigerian AfroJazz band Ajetoro.

-written and performed music for theatre. Including London Bubble Theatre show 'Blackbirds' (doing runs at Dilston Grove, The Albany, The Pumphouse and Canada Water Arts Space), and Nick Cassenbaum's 'Bubble Schmeisis' (Edinburgh Festival, 2016).

Yes.

- Where and with whom did you train?

Saxophone;
I studied at Leeds College of Music, where I was lucky enough to be taught by tutors including;
Jim Corry (Corinne Bailey Rae, Jamiroquai, Roy Wood and Mark Ronson),
Tori Freestone (Passionate Dictatorship, Fringe Magnetic), and Christophe De Bezenac (Trio VD)

Clarinet;
During my time studying at SOAS I was fortunate enough to study with Merlin Shepherd (Hamsa, The Shepherds, The Klezmatics), and Susi Evans (She'Koyoh, The London Klezmer Quartet)

- Which subject(s) do you teach?

Having recently graduated from the renowned Jazz Studies course at Leeds College of Music I specialise in Jazz Saxophone, however, I am also happy to teach Classical Clarinet, Composition, and Music Theory.

- Tell me about your qualifications.

BA(Hons) Leeds College of Music, Performance - Jazz Saxophone, 2:1 (2007-2010)

MA School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, Performance - Clarinet, Distinction (2015-2017)

Grade 8 Clarinet ABRSM

- How much do you charge?

I charge £25 for 30mins and £35 for an hour.

- Where do you teach?

I mainly teach at home but am also willing to travel to students who live nearby. I live 15 minutes walk from East Dulwich train station, and 10 minutes from Lordship Lane where there are good bus links.

- When are you available?

I am generally free to teach during the day, evenings, weekends and during school holidays.

- Which ages and levels do you teach?

All ages and abilities are welcome, Trinity Guildhall/ ABRSM syllabus can be covered, or alternatively lessons can be specifically tailored to the individual students aims.

- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?

Both practical and theory ABRSM grades.
