Learn English with an ESOL tutor in Downpatrick

The 70/30 rule is a teaching principle where students speak 70% of the time and listen 30%.

Here is why this balance accelerates progress:

• Active practice builds fluency: verbal practice strengthens neural pathways for spontaneous speech
• Mistakes become learning moments: real-time correction helps you fix habits before they stick
• Confidence grows through use: regular speaking practice reduces anxiety about real conversations

Standard lessons usually reverse this ratio, with instructors dominating. Private ESOL tutoring lets you flip that balance and maximise your speaking time.

Effective tutors design tasks that prompt continuous speaking, from everyday dialogues to workplace situations.

The average price of ESOL tutoring in Downpatrick is around £15/h.

Prices differ based on a few key elements:

• The student's proficiency (Entry Level, Level 1, or Level 2)
• The tutor's qualifications and experience (CELTA, DELTA, teaching certificates)
• How often you study (one-hour or ninety-minute lessons)
• The format (video call, in-person, or hybrid)

Booking a block of lessons often reduces the hourly rate. Video lessons tend to cost less and still deliver excellent progress. Most tutors offer a first session at no charge to ensure a good fit.

ESOL stands for English for Speakers of Other Languages. It covers English courses aimed at non-native speakers.

Private ESOL lessons work on four essential language areas:

• Reading: understanding written texts, from everyday signs to formal documents
• Writing: composing clear sentences, emails, and forms
• Listening skills: following spoken English in conversations and media
• Oral fluency: communicating clearly with colleagues and neighbours

What sets ESOL apart is its emphasis on living, working, and studying in Britain.
