Find a Japanese tutor near me in Milton Keynes

There are two ways to count in Japanese: one borrowed from Chinese, one purely Japanese.

Sino-Japanese numbers (used for dates, phone numbers, and maths):

• 1 = ichi, 2 = ni, 3 = san, 4 = shi or yon, 5 = go
• 6 = roku, 7 = shichi or nana, 8 = hachi, 9 = kyuu or ku, 10 = juu

The native system (often paired with everyday items):

• 1 = hitotsu, 2 = futatsu, 3 = mittsu, 4 = yottsu, 5 = itsutsu
• 6 = muttsu, 7 = nanatsu, 8 = yattsu, 9 = kokonotsu, 10 = too

Some numbers have alternative readings to avoid sounds linked to bad luck.

Japanese lessons in Milton Keynes typically cost £17/h per hour.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• Your current level (JLPT N5 through N1 preparation)
• Your teacher's background (native speaker, certified instructor, university degree)
• How you take the lesson (remote, in-person, or hybrid)
• Frequency and duration (one-off lessons or regular packages)

Many tutors offer discounted rates for booking multiple lessons in advance.

The difficulty depends on which aspects you focus on first.

Key differences from English:

• Three writing systems: hiragana for native words, katakana for loanwords, and kanji for meaning-based characters
• Grammar structure: verbs come at the end of sentences, which feels backwards at first
• No articles or plurals: there is no distinction between singular and plural nouns

On the positive side: spelling is phonetic, and verb conjugation follows predictable patterns.
