Become a Law Student in the City of Glasgow

Are you keen to fight crime but don't have the thirst for dangerous PC duties? Or would you like to be the voice of reason when two parties need to come to an agreement or settlement? There are so many reasons to want to work in Law, but there are also many hurdles to overcome, the first being getting qualified.

How do you Train to be a Lawyer?

According to Prospects.ac.uk, "Becoming a lawyer via the university route requires you to complete a qualifying law degree (LLB) before taking the Solicitors Qualifying Examination (SQE), which is set to replace the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC) for all new entrants in September 2021".

It's also possible to transfer an alternative course to a law-related degree.

A six-year Solicitor Apprenticeship is another option, aimed at A-Level graduates, paralegals or other legal executives.

Whereas if you want to become a barrister, you must complete three stages of training, including the law degree followed by a Bar course and pupillage course.

Finally, to become a CILEx Lawyer, you can do so by going through the CILEx Professional Qualification (CPQ) route.

Law Courses in Glasgow

The University of Glasgow has its very own School of Law, where you can study one of the following:

  • Common-Law [LLB]
  • Common-Law (graduate entry) [LLB]
  • Scots Law [LLB]
  • Scots Law (graduate entry) [LLB]

In addition, GCU and The University of Strathclyde offer Law Schools with numerous law degrees available such as Employment and Labour Law Studies.

The City of Glasgow College and Glasgow Clyde College offer pupils the opportunity to study a range of Legal-related courses

A Closer Look at a Law Degree

The University of Glasgow offers a Common Law degree, but you may have noticed that it also provides the option of a Scots Law course. This is because the Common Law degree on offer is only suitable for those wishing to practice law in England, Wales and Northern Ireland (plus Canada and India). Those wishing to remain in Scotland will need to study for the Scots Law degree.

The programme offers students a great grounding in the various areas of law while also allowing pupils to take on extra optional modules.

During the first year, you can expect to cover:

  • Constitutional law
  • Introduction to legal study
  • Obligations (contract, delict and unjustified enrichment)
  • Family law.

With optional modules available such as Roman law of property and obligations along with Criminal law and evidence.

During the second year of your LLB course, you will study:

  • Jurisprudence
  • Law and government
  • Business organisations
  • Commercial law
  • European Union law
  • Property law

The last four modules are obligatory for those wishing to practice law in Scotland. In addition, optional topics are International Private law, Environmental law, Advanced International law and Labour Law.

If taking the course to an ordinary level, then your third year will be your final year. However, if continuing to graduate with Honours, you will be in full-time education for four years.

Hire a Superprof Tutor

If you want to successfully enrol on a Law course, then you may need the help of an experienced tutor.

Private tutors not only help you with your coursework, exam preparation and other course-related tasks, but they can also help you to develop new ideas and alternative ways of thinking. A tutor could totally change the way you look at your learning and lead you to great success.

Law tutors are normally qualified law professionals (however some may be students themselves with a very good track record of assisting peers or less advanced students). Therefore, you can expect law tutors to be intellectual and to really know their stuff when it comes to the legal system. Looking out for someone with an LLB or LLM degree is strongly recommended.

If you are struggling with a particular area of law, then you could hire a tutor who specialises in this area to help you to overcome your weaknesses. However, even if a tutor has a specialism, they will no doubt be able to explain the numerous complex areas of law in a way that you can understand.

If you are wondering what to look for in a tutor aside from their knowledge and qualifications, then we suggest you find someone who is patient, perceptive and passionate. If you are going to advance in Law then you want someone to act as a mentor and someone who will guide you to success and strive for the best for you, while also showing you how great this subject is.

Every student is different and learns in their own way, which means that law tutors will possess the skills to recognise strengths and weaknesses and know how to set about tackling your studies.
