English Literature brings together a variety of topics, from poetry to prose, that build your analytical and written communication skills.

• Poetic forms and close reading: you study how poets use language, form, and structure to create meaning and effect.
• Novel and short story study: you develop skills in analysing how writers construct character, setting, and plot for effect.
• Drama and Shakespeare: you analyse plays for their use of conflict, character, and language, including at least one Shakespeare text.
• Literary theory and criticism: you develop the ability to apply critical frameworks and engage with scholarly perspectives on texts.
• Essay writing and textual analysis: you develop your written voice and learn to present a sustained, well-supported literary argument.

A private English Literature tutor can help you focus on the areas where you need the most support, whether that's close reading, essay structure, or a specific text.

Improving at English Literature comes down to a mix of active reading, regular practice, and building strong analytical habits.

• Read actively, not passively: make notes on character, theme, and technique as you read so that you build up a detailed picture of each text.
• Focus on the writer's choices: train yourself to link language to meaning — every word choice, sentence structure, or narrative technique is deliberate.
• Write regularly: timed writing exercises build the speed and confidence you need for exam conditions.
• Engage with secondary sources: exploring different critical interpretations helps you develop your own informed point of view.
• Review and revise consistently: periodic revision means key quotations, themes, and analytical points stay fresh and accessible.

The right tutor makes the learning process more focused and efficient, so you can build genuine skill and confidence in the subject.
