Music theory rests on foundational ideas that make everything else click into place.

• Reading music: Learning to read notes on a stave, understand time signatures, and recognise rhythmic values is the first step.
• Pitch and scales: Understanding major and minor scales gives you the vocabulary to analyse any piece of music.
• Chords: Chords are built from scales and show how notes combine to create tension and resolution.
• Intervals: An interval is the distance between two notes — recognising them by ear and on paper is a core skill.

Once you understand these foundations, progress in both performance and composition accelerates significantly.

A private music theory lesson in Liverpool costs approximately £25/h.

Pricing can vary based on:

• Your current level (beginner, intermediate, or preparing for ABRSM/Trinity grades)
• The instructor's credentials and track record with graded music exams
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• The lesson format (online, at home, or at the tutor's)

Most teachers offer a trial lesson so you can assess their teaching style before committing.

The 1 3 5 rule is a simple but powerful principle that explains the structure of nearly every chord you'll encounter.

• The first note (1): The root is the starting note of the chord and gives it its name — for example, C in a C major chord.
• The third (3): A major third produces a happy sound; a minor third gives a sadder, more introspective quality.
• The top note (5): The fifth adds stability and fullness to the chord without changing its major or minor quality.

Understanding the 1 3 5 rule opens the door to chord construction across any key or instrument.
