Starting on the sax is often easier than on clarinet or flute.

The sax's mechanics help beginners produce clean notes more easily.

The real challenge lies in embouchure—the way you shape your mouth around the mouthpiece.

With consistent practice, you can sound confident in three to six months.

A one-hour saxophone lesson in Leatherhead usually runs about £33/h.

Your rate may change based on:

• The student's level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced)
• The tutor's credentials and background (conservatoire-trained, gigging professionals, etc.)
• Lesson length and frequency (weekly, fortnightly, or ad-hoc)
• Where lessons take place (face-to-face, webcam, or hybrid)

Block-booking five or ten lessons often brings the hourly rate down.

Many students underestimate how physical saxophone playing really is.

• Embouchure: A poor embouchure causes squeaks, flat notes, or an airy tone.
• Breath control: Practising long tones builds the lung capacity and control you need.
• Intonation: Beginners often play sharp in the upper register or flat down low.
• Reed care: Learning which reed strength suits you is part of the journey.

Private lessons let you focus on your specific weak points.
