Start skating with the help of real skateboarders

Leeds has quite a string skate scene, and some are keen to show the world what the city can offer like-minded individuals in the way of skateboarding fun. Reece Leung, a photographer, has shot some promotional content on the YouTube channel entitled Welcome To Leeds whereby he showcases the Leeds skate scene to the world. If you haven't already, then go and watch it! You might learn some more about the skate culture in this vibrant city.

Skateboarding Fashion In Leeds

With skateboarding being quite a popular activity for those living in Leeds, you'd imagine there would be some decent shopping for skateboard clothing, right?

The Welcome Skate Store is one of the biggest skate shops in the area, offering sporting goods as well as skateboarding fashion. Many items are streetwear-inspired and are very distinctive in style, so if you want some unique but typical skateboarding outfits then do go and give them a visit. Aside from them, you can find numerous other shops selling skateboard gear such as Aggroverts Skateboards, NOTE Skateboard Shop, 420 Skate Store, The Black Sheep Store, Hive Skate Club and Skatehut, to name but a few. Of course, there is also a Vans store where you can buy clothing and iconic footwear suitable for skateboarding. Are you even a skateboarder if you don't have your own pair of worn-in Vans?

Many of the shops can be found in the city centre but some are dotted around the northern quarter and other areas of the city so you're sure to find somewhere close to your location.

Skateboard Parks And Clubs In Leeds

If you've grown tired of your usual skate park and want to find something new, or you don't know where to start, then there's a handy website named SkateParks.co.uk which lists all of the skate parks in your area. They'll advise you of each location, how much (if anything) it costs to use the facilities, what the surface is like, whether it's indoors or outdoors, and so on.

Did you know some skate parks are made of metal, while others could be made of wood or concrete? This will of course affect your skating if you aren't used to skating on a particular surface so it's something to bear in mind.

According to their website, there are eight active skate parks in the area, including Beckett Park, Kippax and Morley.

When it comes to skateboarding clubs, then Leeds University Union is a great place to look. They promote skateboarding for novices all the way up to pro level and offer lessons and events for members. Membership is free and it is all about the skateboarding experience - making it fun and accessible for all! They also have links to some of the local shops so check them out for discounts on equipment or clothing.

Can A Skateboard Tutor Help You Turn Pro?

Like with many sports, you can't do it alone. Even those great bikers or golfers have people helping them, from video people to trainers. And just like you, they help to build them up and help them to grow in one way or another. A skateboard tutor will be there to help you from teaching skateboard terms, to showing you and encouraging you to do tricks at your own pace, while also showing you how to land them without causing injury to yourself. You see, when you skateboard, you need to know when to bail when a trick isn't working out so that you don't cause harm to yourself or others, and these tutors can help you to develop these reflexes and make you a better and more accomplished skateboarder.

Of course, if you are training regularly in the hope to turn pro, then having a tutor who may have solid connections in the industry is also worthwhile as they could help you to get noticed for your skills.

What Does Being A Pro Mean?

When you're a pro skateboarder, you will probably be spotted by sponsors and become one of their team. This may mean travelling the country or world, even, to compete in tournaments against other skateboarders and usually be a part of marketing campaigns.

As a pro skateboarder, you will often make your living off of winning prizes, events and endorsements but some also make some extra cash by producing content for YouTube or by teaching novice athletes how to skateboard. One thing is for sure - as a pro, you will live and breathe skateboarding which is a great thing if you are truly passionate about this wheels sport!
