A violin has four strings tuned to the notes G, D, A and E, from lowest to highest.

• G string: It sits closest to the chin and gives the violin its dark, mellow voice.
• D string: The second-lowest string, often used for melodic passages.
• A string: A bright, clear string used for many melodies.
• E string: The thinnest and highest string, capable of brilliant, singing tones.

Each string is tuned a perfect fifth above the one below it.

Once you can tune and recognise each string, you can start building finger patterns.

Yes, the violin is widely considered one of the most challenging instruments for beginners.

• Fretless fingerboard: Unlike a guitar, the violin has no frets, so you must place your fingers exactly right to play in tune.
• Bowing technique: Producing a clear, sustained sound with the bow requires coordination of the arm, wrist and fingers.
• Posture and hold: Holding the violin under your chin while moving both hands independently feels unnatural at first.

Despite the challenges, progress is deeply rewarding once you hear your first clean melody.

Many learners find the discipline of violin study enriches other areas of life too.
