So, by the looks of it, you want to start doing some yoga. Maybe it’s for the vigorous body workout. Maybe it’s for the restorative, meditative aspects of this ancient practice. Maybe it’s to develop your body awareness, to think more about your breathwork, and to be able to wind down and enter into some sort of proper, deep relaxation.

In fact, you, the new student, may well feel a little overwhelmed by all this – and we absolutely don’t blame you. But rather than letting this all put you off, consider that all of these different yoga styles are actually part of the richness of the discipline, part of the beauty and versatility of the exercise, and testament to the endurance of the yoga philosophy.
And further, all of this stuff is not really stuff you need to know right now. New students might find, yes, that they are a little bowled away when entering a vinyasa session by its dynamism and movement. Others might find, having walked into a yoga studio and been advised to hold one salutation for five minutes, that their connective tissues are quite sore and that they want to move on to different yoga poses or salutations. (That last one is yin yoga, by the way, so maybe avoid it if that doesn’t sound like your thing.)
Really, any good yoga teacher will know the ins and outs of beginner yoga and be happy to talk you through it. They understand that yoga for beginners does not necessarily need to be filled with technical vocabulary.
They key here is that you talk to your yoga instructor and ask them about the best yoga moves and yoga practice for you. To do that, you need to hunt through the different yoga teachers to see which one is best.
In all this, the important thing remains: by signing up for yoga classes you are doing something that, potentially, will actually change your life. Because those who practice yoga welcome into their lives – into their body and mind – a whole load of changes for the better.
First of all, yoga really is a full body workout. And with such workouts, you will see that you will build strength and stamina, you’ll increase flexibility, and you’ll develop your core strength particularly, your body’s foundational strength.
You’ll also, really, be accepting a different way of life – a life that embraces stillness and stability throughout the franticness of normal life. This, in a way, is the point of the practice of yoga. Through breathing techniques and, importantly, through breath awareness, you’ll grow a greater unity of mind and body.
This isn’t as ‘new age’ as it sounds. Or, maybe it is, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. People in the yoga community experience drastic improvements to their mental health, for example. It’s a sort of mindfulness, but it is a physical practice as much as a mental technique.
We’re imagining that you are fairly sold as to the benefits of yoga, considering that you (still!) here. However, just take a moment to remember that traditional yoga has been practised for the last five thousand years. We know this because we have the Sanskrit texts (that also outline the principles of Ayurvedic medicine). Five thousand years. Let that sink in.
And so, honestly, there’s not really any surprise that there are a million and one different forms of yoga – given that history has given people over five millennia to play with the discipline. It’s quite an impressive lineage that you are going to be joining.
So, in the end, how do you crack on and find yourself a yoga tutor?
Well, what you could do is go to loads of different yoga studios, try out lots of different yoga teachers, and sign up to lots of different group classes. People like doing this: it can be fun, social, and you can meet new people.
However, other people don’t, necessarily. Maybe the class schedules don’t fit into their timetable. Maybe the style of yoga on offer is not quite what they are after. Maybe they don’t find the space there to enter into the right mental space. And this is all completely okay.
