About Charlie

I recently graduated from LSE with a First Class degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and this autumn I'm beginning an MPhil in Economics at the University of Oxford. I have a strong all-round academic record, including top grades in both maths and English, which are the foundations of entrance-exam preparation. I understand how much these exams can matter to families, and I take that responsibility seriously.

Before university I spent a gap year working as a classroom assistant in a UK prep school and an Australian secondary school, working alongside teachers with children from primary age upwards. That experience taught me how differently children learn at this age and how much their confidence shapes their performance — particularly under the pressure of a competitive exam, where a calm, well-prepared child does far better than an anxious one.

I'm patient, reliable and good with children, and I take the responsibility of tutoring seriously. I always turn up prepared, communicate clearly with parents about their child's progress, and genuinely care whether a child improves. My aim is for every child to feel more confident and capable going into their exam than when we started.

English

I'm a recent LSE graduate (First Class, Philosophy, Politics and Economics) heading to Oxford this autumn for an MPhil in Economics. I have a strong academic record across both maths and English — an A* in A-level Maths and A*s in GCSE English Language and Literature — which are the two core components of 11+ and independent-school entrance exams. I also spent a gap year working as a classroom assistant in a UK prep school (ages 7–13) and an Australian secondary school (ages 12–18), so I've worked closely with children in exactly the age range these exams are aimed at.

My method is straightforward. I start by finding out where a child is strongest and where they need work, then build up each area — maths reasoning, English comprehension, vocabulary, and verbal and non-verbal reasoning — through clear explanation and steady practice with past papers under timed conditions. Entrance exams reward accuracy under time pressure as much as knowledge, so alongside the content I focus on exam technique and building a child's confidence so they stay calm on the day. I set focused practice between lessons and keep parents informed of how their child is progressing.

I prepare children for 11+, 7+ and 13+ entrance and common entrance exams, covering the maths and English reasoning that these papers test. Whether your child is aiming for a selective grammar school or an independent school place, I tailor each lesson to their level and the specific exams they're sitting.

Lessons are typically one hour, though I'm happy to arrange shorter sessions for younger children who focus better in a shorter slot. Having worked with primary-age children day-to-day, I adapt my manner and pace to a child's age and confidence, and I keep lessons encouraging and low-pressure.

I'm based in London over the summer and moving to Oxford in late September for postgraduate study; from the autumn I continue to tutor online with more limited availability.
