I first and foremost look at the curriculum the student is studying. Then discuss (with parents also) their goals and what they wish to achieve or gain from tuition. It is important to adapt to the students style of learning; and make sure they find the task at hand exciting. I try to make all my lessons fun; as a bored student will never put in 100% effort.
My teaching method is very active and I try to make my lessons as fun and game- based as possible. However, I do still think that there is a place for more traditional learning methods too.
I use the simple to complex approach when teaching concepts coupled with age specific differentiated activities to cater for all children.
I adapt my methods for the child. For example for a teanage boy with ADD, I'll make things fast, repetitive and fun. However for a quiet shy girl with trouble reading, we would go slow and steady. If your child requires a tutor, you want them to have that extra help, my methods allow me to adapt to your child's needs. Education isn't a "one glove fits all" situation.
Most of my lessons taught are students aged 8-17. Either preparing for 11+ or sitting GCSE/A level exams. I believe that confidence is built through nurturing the correct techniques right from the start. I have witnessed through experience that with committed practice, any student can fulfill their desired goals at any mathematical level.
