About Hugo
I started tutoring German back in high school, and it's stayed with me ever since — through a career and a life that's taken me from Luxembourg, where I grew up speaking German, French, and Luxembourgish, to business school in Lausanne and Rotterdam, and now to New York City.
For the past several years I've worked at Amazon, including two roles based in Luxembourg where I drove business growth across Germany and the wider EU — meaning I used German daily in real negotiations and partnerships, not just classroom exercises. Outside of work, I coach table tennis at PingPod as a part-time national-level coach, and I compete myself (currently ranked nationally in both Luxembourg and the US).
Between growing up multilingual, tutoring German through high school, using it professionally for years, and coaching competitively, I've taught and learned language and skill from just about every angle. I bring that same mindset to tutoring: structured, patient, focused on the "why" behind a mistake rather than just the fix — and never taking it too seriously.

My Teaching Method
I teach German as a connected system, not isolated rules — and I fix root causes, not just symptoms. Lessons are built around your specific goals, with real feedback each session and a bit of humor along the way (German doesn't have to feel dry).
A Typical Lesson (60 min)
- Quick welcome & review (10 min) — conversation practice + recap of last session
- New material (25 min) — one focused topic, tied to your goals/syllabus
- Applied practice (15 min) — role-play or real-world scenarios
- Feedback & plan check (10 min) — what to work on, and are we still on track
