About Janet
I have always been a creative person. As a child, I was always making something and working with my hands. My earliest memories are of making things myself because I wanted to see the ideas I had in my head, and also I felt that I could create things that were better than what was found in the everyday world. I did not take any art classes in high school. When searching the course catalog prior to my first semester undergrad I knew as soon as I saw "Studio Arts" that was where I belonged. The first course I took was Sculpture I, not introduction to 3D design, I went straight into clay and plaster sculpting. I never looked back or wanted to do anything unrelated to art. I was a studio arts major, but sort of accidentally earned a second major in art history. I'd taken at least one art history class every semester because I loved it. When registering for my final semester I was told "You need Ancient Art". I laughed and said "No I've definitely taken enough art history for a minor." But my advisor said, " You need Ancient Art to earn the major." And so, I registered for Ancient Art. After undergrad I moved 1000 miles across the nation to attend graduate school. I wanted to explore new space, new landscape and new people. I earned my Master of Fine Arts degree in painting and drawing with a minor emphasis in printmaking. My graduate experience was filled with teaching opportunities which greatly helped direct my career path for the following 20 years. I have taught in many different settings. I have always found great satisfaction in witnessing my students make breakthroughs in their own artistic skill, and I love when they bring new insights to the philosophy of art history. My favorite comment to make to a studio art student when they complete something that really impresses me will always be " I wish I painted that."

I truly love helping others discover studio art and art history. My art history classes are designed for high school homeschoolers, college, and adult learners. They are fitting for students with no knowledge of art history, and students who are looking for deeper understanding and conversation about art. My methods of teaching art history are rooted in the desire to unfold the story of human creativity and how it progresses from one era to the next. I think that history is seen as daunting or boring to some because they think of it as memorizing dates and names. I avoid that method by discussing with students how art styles overlap and develop from one era to the next, the pivotal artists and art pieces that spur art into new directions, and the philosophies behind the different art historical eras. As a studio artist, I have experience with several different media including the following: All drawing media Oil paint Acrylic paint Watercolor Gouache Collage Printmaking Sculpture including clay, plaster, plaster casting, installation, found object. My studio art courses for beginners focus on building strong foundations of observation and understanding of art elements (line, shape, texture, color, value). Students are encouraged to explore different media. I greatly believe in observing individual skills of each student and proposing methods to advance their skill and creative style. Online studio courses would require students to work outside of class time to advance their projects. Students are required to supply their own materials. Online studio courses cover the fundamentals of art and drawing and painting from observation.
